Saw "Inglourious Basterds"

Big Dick McGee

If you don't know, now ya know
What a weird movie, even by Tarantino standards. Very talky (which I like), but it just felt...lacking. I can't put my finger on why. I mean, it was beautifully shot, featured wonderful performances, and had great dialogue. But somehow the sum of all the parts just didn't add up.

Maybe it's because I saw it on DVD, after all the hype and praise, but I found it to be one of Tarantino's weakest films overall.

I never saw Death Proof, so I didn't include it here. But I've heard that one was bad as well. I guess after the masterpiece that was "Kill Bill", I expected more.

i thought it was rather awesome, with a huge, "oh fuck!" type moment in the middle that was up there with marvin getting shot in the face.

as talky as it was, all of that talk had the tension of nazi occupation over it - the first scene you knew something was going to go down, so even the "could i have some milk" shit was tense for me.

Oh, no doubt, there were some incredibly tense moments, including the scene were the "Jew Hunter" sits down and has dessert with Shoshana. Christoph Wentz was the best thing about the movie, and he electrified every scene he was in. If he's not nominated for an Oscar, it's a crime.

What was the "Oh Fuck!" moment you're referring to? The scene in the basement?

i thought the kill bill was shit too, i reli think he has gone off the boil in the last 5-8years

The first Kill Bill was ok, the 2nd one just ran out of steam, it could easily have been one much better, tighter film

Eh, I liked both volumes of Kill Bill, I honestly found them to be a return to glory after the somewhate mediocre "Jackie Brown".

Ok, watched this on tv last night, disappointed.

For a film that runs nearly three hours, and is named after the basterds, we don't actually get to see them do much.

We get that big introduction that talks them up, then it immediately cuts to Hitler talking about their exploits.

We then see a bunch of Nazis that are already dead, and later we get a flashback to them killing three others in a car.

The only time we see a bunch of them get into a real time shootout, they all get killed.

And then when it comes to actually killing Hitler they can't even pull that off themselves without help from a couple of french people, and a Nazi who recognises which way the wind is blowing.

Hell Brad Pitt doesn't even kill anyone till one minute before the end of the film.

I just felt it promised more than it delivered.

If this is anything to go by, I will probably wait for Django unchained to come on tv too.

I saw it last night as well, but as I haven't liked anything since From Dusk Till Dawn (which Tarantino wrote but didn't direct) I wasn't expecting too much.

I think BDM hit the nail on the head really. It had great dialogue and some very good performances (though Brad Pitt seemed to think he was in a different movie). But all the interest for me came from the tension built up through those long scenes. For that reason, it has quite limited rewatching value.

And the Basterds really didn't come across as very menacing. Instead they actually came across as being kind of shambolic and clueless. I was expecting them to go around torturing and mutilating. I guess you could argue that it puts us in the position of everyone else who'd heard overblown rumours about how badass the Basterds were. No one lives up to their reputation.

The only thing that made me laugh in the whole film was Brad Pitt's thick southern accent when he was pretending to be Italian.

Having Austin Powers working for Churchill was a bit of a strange choice too.

Still, could have been worse, they originally wanted Eddie Murphy for the projectionist.

Oh so that's what was going on. I was looking at Mike Myers character wondering why it looked like an actor was wearing a lot of makeup when they could've just found someone who already looked the part. Didn't realise who was actually playing him.
