Hey so I watched this today.
I really really liked it.
I mean firstly it's Much Ado About Nothing, which is an amazing play on its own, but I really enjoyed this adaptation of it.
Alexis Denisof and Amy Acker make a really good Beatrice and Benedict, and while they keep the on screen chemistry they had in Angel, you don't ever really feel that you're watching Fred and Wesley instead of Beatrice and Benedict.
The rest of the casting is just as good, I was really surprised at how good Fran Kranz was as Claudio and Sean Maher was really creepy as Don John (as he should be). I mean the biggest problem with Sean Maher is that he basically disappears half way through but that's Shakespeare's fault. Nathon Fillion stole every scene he was in.
I really liked how Joss managed to set it in contemporary times but still make it feel authentic. The black and white and the slightly dream-like direction establishes this is being a slight fantasy world before the characters even speak, making it less jarring when they start going on in iambic pentameter while still wearing suits and using iPhones. The film does occasionally poke fun at it's modern say setting, but not in any way that takes you out of the film's world.
Joss' direction was pretty restrained, which was good as it meant that the focus was on the acting. One thing I did like was some of the composition of the frames. Thanks to it being shot in his house (which is lovely!) you can tell he's had a long time to think about some of the angles and compositions of the shots.
All in all I really liked it. But it didn't have Michelle Trachtenberg in it so it was UTTER TRASH.
