Unattended candle causes fire
By BRIAN WILLIAMS, Staff Writer
An unattended candle caused a house fire about 2:45 p.m. Thursday, the home's owner said.
Priscilla Carter, 33, said she left a scented oil candle burning in her kitchen when she left her home briefly to get some toilet paper and Ding Dongs.
When she returned five or 10 minutes later, she opened the door to her kitchen on the south side of her home and was met with flames, she said.
She called for help on her cell phone and the Fire Department arrived.
It was confirmed at the scene the cause of the fire was a candle on a kitchen cabinet.
The blaze didn't take long to extinguish, but because the house had cellulose insulation, which continues to build up heat, fire fighters had to pull all of the insulation out of the attic.
There was no one in the house at the time of the fire, and Carter has fire insurance on the house.
