Paramount Pictures announced today that Lost creator J.J. Abrams will co-write, produce and direct the eleventh Star Trek film, set for release in 2008.
According to an article in the Daily Variety, the new film will be a prequel to the original Star Trek series, featuring younger versions of characters like James T. Kirk and Spock. The movie will chronicle events such as their first meeting at Starfleet Academy and their first mission into outer space.

The as-yet untitled new film will be written by Abrams together with Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci. Abrams is the creator of television series such as Felicity, Alias and Lost, and will soon be making his debut as a feature film director with Paramount's Mission Impossible: III. He's also written the scripts for films such as Regarding Henry and Armageddon. Kurtzman and Orci cooperated with Abrams on the MI: III script, and were previously part of the Alias writing staff, as well as writing the scripts for films such as The Island and the upcoming Transformers movie.

Besides Abrams, the film's producing team will include Damon Lindelof and Bryan Burk, who both also produce Lost. The Variety article made no mention of the fate of Rick Berman, who has been heading the Trek franchise for the past two decades.

According to Variety, the decision to produce a new Trek film is part of an effort by new Paramount head Brad Grey to try and raise the profile of Paramount by producing several "high-profile tentpole" movie, and having them developed by some of the most talented people in Hollywood.

The Starfleet Academy concept is an idea that has been floating around Paramount for several decades now. In February, former Trek movie producer Harve Bennett told the Trek Nation that as recently as two years ago he had a discussion with the then-current regime at Paramount about reviving the idea. Variety confirmed Bennett's statements, writing that several years ago Rick Berman was asked by Paramount to develop a Starfleet Academy feature together with Jordan Kerner and Kerry McCluggage. Presumably this idea evolved into the Star Trek: The Beginning concept, which now appears dead in the water (story).

I've always hated the Starfleet Academy movie idea. The production team behind it and the lack of Berman gives me some hope, though.

"He's also written the scripts for films such as Regarding Henry and Armageddon."

So you JUST KNOW it's going to be good.

The Island wasn't too bad.

Isn't Abrams the one who wrote the Superman script where Superman rides a motocycle and all his powers come from a robotic suit ?

Yep, this guy has respect for a franchise's history. I'm sure nothing will go wrong.

You know I'm now certain Abrams is a hack and Lost only turned out so well due to the people who are working under him. Look how bad Alias now blows.

I'm more worried about Damon Lindelof having his attention drawn away from Lost to focus on this mess. I don't care if Trek flops, but to drag Lost down with it is a crime against television !

Well Roddenberry's ashes were put in a can and shot into space, BUT I guarantee those ashes have begun to spin so fast that they've created their own warp field !

His can hit warp 8 with G4's "SET. PHASERS. TO. KILL!" promotions.

Oh God. These fools can't let Trek fucking die with any last shread of dignity.
Kill this fucking idea. :pissed:

How many times over the last 20 year have we heard the Starfleet Academy idea? Nothing has been able to kill this rumor. NOTHING.

Let's face it, Trek as we know it is over. We are about to step into reboot territory. I can see why they want to go this way now but I think it's a mistake.

Clearly they are worried about adhering to the amount of continuity that has ammassed over 700+ episodes, they don't have any fresh "locales" for a new series and in the end it would just be another ship-based, new crew series with some lame, but ultimately pointless twist to make it seem new.

Parmaount seems to want to go back to the start instead of building on the Berman/Next-Gen era which includes Voyager and DS9 and instead go back and re-visit the iconic start of TOS in some way.

It's a stupid idea, a reboot was never needed. What's needed is good writing and a show that takes risks. You don't need to re imagine the franchise, it's a kick in the face to the hard core fans and most of them don't even realize it. Mainstreaming and simplifying the premise so new watchers can start from scratch as long as they have a simple grasp of a few pop-culture references. Kirk, Spock, Enterprise, Starfleet.. ect.

J.J Abrams is decent enough but I doubt he knows the franchise as well as someone in his position should. Sure; Lost is a great series, it's also full of unresolved plots and "tricks" to keep people tuning in every week ala the endless cliffhangers.

I wouldn't say I was blown out of the water by him at all.

But I guess he is as good as any we have for the moment. But Kirk, Spock, Academy? How lame. Kirk and Spock didn't even GO to the Academy at the same time and it's clear from the early TOS that they didn't know each other very well. Hence where the Academy idea seems to be reboot territory or even worse, a blatant disregard for simple continuity.

Clearly the movie won't stay at the Academy, but I imagine it means Spock and Kirk will be cadets going on their first mission or something vaugely along those lines.

I don't like it. I don't like the idea of re-casting Spock and Kirk whatsoever either. Sure many iconic characters have been recast. James Bond and Obi-Wan springs to mind. But Nimoy and Shatner have "been" those characters for 40 years. Even off screen they still hold the life of these characters within them.

I just find it incredibly weak that out of the whole UNIVERSE of possible stories we're going back again and revisiting when we should be pushing forward into the franchise with planned stories and a premise that dares to actually be gutsy with itself.

ST:XI while it is very early to say yet will most likely suck completely and be an actual travesty or be barely passable. This movie - as is - I cannot imagine reinvigorating the franchise.

The whole thing sucks.
