The Star Trek franchise is expanding on CBS All Access. The streaming service has announced Star Trek: Short Treks, four stand-alone short stories that will begin rolling out on Thursday, October 4 ahead of the early 2019 Season 2 return of Star Trek: Discovery.

Each of the four stories will center on a key character, including familiar faces from Star Trek: Discovery: Mary Wiseman (Tilly), Doug Jones (Saru) and Rainn Wilson (Harry Mudd), in a short he will also direct, as well as a new character unfamiliar to fans, Craft, played by Aldis Hodge.

Star Trek: Discovery follows the voyages of Starfleet on their missions to discover new worlds and new life forms, and one Starfleet officer who must learn that to truly understand all things alien, you must first understand yourself. The series features a new ship and new characters while embracing the same ideology and hope for the future that inspired a generation of dreamers and doers. The series is produced by CBS Television Studios, Secret Hideout and Roddenberry Entertainment.

Descriptions and premiere dates of the four installments as well as a preview clip follow below.

Runaway – Thursday, Oct. 4

Onboard the U.S.S. Discovery, Ensign Tilly (Mary Wiseman) encounters an unexpected visitor in need of help. However, this unlikely pair may have more in common than meets the eye.

Written by Jenny Lumet & Alex Kurtzman. Directed by Maja Vrvilo.

Calypso – Thursday, Nov. 8

After waking up in an unfamiliar sickbay, Craft (Aldis Hodge) finds himself on board a deserted ship, and his only companion and hope for survival is an A.I. computer interface.

Teleplay by Michael Chabon. Story by Sean Cochran and Michael Chabon. Directed by Olatunde Osunsanmi.

The Brightest Star – Thursday, Dec. 6

Before he was the first Kelpien to join Starfleet, Saru (Doug Jones) lived a simple life on his home planet of Kaminar with his father and sister. Young Saru, full of ingenuity and a level of curiosity uncommon among his people, yearns to find out what lies beyond his village, leading him on an unexpected path.

Written by Bo Yeon Kim & Erika Lippoldt. Directed by Douglas Aarniokoski.

The Escape Artist – Thursday, Jan. 3

Harry Mudd (Rainn Wilson), back to his old tricks of stealing and double-dealing, finds himself in a precarious position aboard a hostile ship – just in time to try out his latest con.

Written by Michael McMahan. Directed by Rainn Wilson.

It's weird how they're acting like this has just been announced when I'm sure we knew about it months ago?

Also still don't know if it'll be on Netflix in the UK like Discovery is (but I'd just download them if not.)

They put the four Short Treks on Netflix UK now that they're all out. They're hidden away under the "trailers and more" bit of Discovery's show page if you can't find them. I watched them all because why not.

Runaway - Tilly makes friends with an alien stowaway princess. It's pleasant enough, Tilly's actress is still good, but it all feels quite rushed. Like the first scene could be the set-up for a whole episode but then they remember they only have fifteen minutes and wrap it all up.

Calypso - This was really good! Set a thousand years in the future(!) where Discovery apparently travels the galaxy with no crew and the computer's evolved a personality. Strong guest performance from whoever the guy was and the woman voicing the computer, this felt like a proper standalone science fiction story and I'd definitely recommend it.

The Brightest Star - Prequel about Saru's life before Starfleet, showing how he differs from the rest of his species. Saru has always been one of the stronger characters in the show and this is a nice character piece for him, though unlike the others it almost feels too long and drags a bit in the middle. Ending is good though.

Escape Artist - Total comedy episode and that's fine! It's good how all four "Short Treks" have different tones. Directed by Rainn Wilson (and written by a Rick and Morty writer) it has his Harry Mudd getting out of trouble in typical (Discovery) Mudd fashion. Yes it's still hard to reconcile him with the TOS Mudd but Rainn Wilson is a talented comedy actor and it's pretty good with a nice TOS reference ending!

So yeah these are actually all worth watching.

The 'Calypso' episode was the most encouraging because it was written by the guy (Michael Chabon) who seems to be writing a lot of the Picard show.

I hope they explain more about the Kelpian planet. Reminiscent of the TOS episode where people report to death chambers as casualties of war.

Which TOS episode was that? Sounds like an old Woody Allen joke from his standup days: "I wasn't drafted by the Army. I'm labeled 4P: In the event of war, I'm a hostage."

I can’t recall if it’s a good episode or not, but that element haunted me as a child. TOS was always good at that.

There will be six. Three (three!) will be all about Pike’s Enterprise. So if you were bummed about never seeing Spock or Number One again, put those fears away. (No confirmation on if we’ll see Pike himself or not). A fourth short will be all about those pesky Tribbles. The fifth will be animated. The sixth? All about my boy Picard. Also, one of these will be directed by none other than film composer Michael Giacchino.

Wild!
