StarCraft and Porn courses being taught in Universities

University opens porn course

A university in Taiwan has opened a course to teach students how to appreciate and analyse porn movies.

The Mass Communication Department of Providence University opened the course this semester, reports United Daily News.

To pass the course, students must give a 15 minute presentation in which they analyse an audience's psychological reaction to a porn clip from an academic perspective.

One worried student, who did not wish to be named, commented: "If I get a very good score in this course, I don't know how I'll explain it to my parents."

When registering for the voluntary course, students signed a paper agreeing that if the scenes were too explicit, they could choose to leave the classroom

The teacher, assistant professor Miss Chen Mingmei, said no students had ever left her class but some would briefly cover their eyes during the stronger scenes.

More than 50 students registered for the course, and most of them confessed that they had watched porn videos before.

Curiosity was given as the main reason for taking the course and most admitted their parents did not know what they were studying.

Another student admitted: "I am really worried my parents will see the score report when it is mailed home. I won?t know what to say if I get a high score

"However if I fail the course, I can speak to my parents and suggest that maybe I should watch more porn."

Students in UC - Berkeley can take up StarCraft studies for college credits. Something we’ve never imagined would happen. I figure World of Warcraft would’ve been the first to be opened for classes but Starcraft did come out much earlier than WoW. Maybe another 2-3 years?

Course Description:

UC Berkeley students with an interest in real-time strategy games and the competitive gaming landscape are encouraged to participate in this class.

This course will go in-depth in the theory of how war is conducted within the confines of the game Starcraft. There will be lecture on various aspects of the game, from the viewpoint of pure theory to the more computational aspects of how exactly battles are conducted. Calculus and Differential Equations are highly recommended for full understanding of the course. Furthermore, the class will take the theoretical into the practical world by analyzing games and replays to reinforce decision-making skills and advanced Starcraft theory.

Class will start with lecture and usually include a special discussion topic having to do with the day’s lecture to inspire new and original thought. At the end of lecture, there may be time to analyze student-submitted replays to illustrate a point or to improve analysis. Homework will be assigned at the end of each class and is due at the beginning of each lecture.

Course Learning Objectives and Goals:
What may look like complex topics are just ways we want you to think more deeply about the game to derive a greater satisfaction from playing. Furthermore, this understanding should have applications in real life, to further synthesize new information from limited inferences. The primary goal is for students to learn, enjoy the art of competitive StarCraft, and have fun. Overall, students will be applying critical thinking, quick decision-making, and game theory skills throughout the sessions. Students will also learn what to look for in a replay or game to learn most effectively.

This is a gamers dream come true, something they’ve always fantasized about other than a porn course (which has came true as well). Some of the prerequisites for the course is that students “should be familiar with all units and some basic StarCraft strategy”. Anyone interested in the course needs to enter the class with “an open and analytic mind”. Oh, and you need to have StarCraft: Brood War, doh!

An interesting point for us in the StarCraft Community with all of this is all the final projects that students will make. A lot of new, interesting points of view will emerge by the end of this course? The only thing the students could want in addition to this is a Blizzard sponsorship and playing around in StarCraft II.

Yes. God commanded us to be fruitful and multiply. The only way to do so is to have as much wanton sex as possible. On the table, bitch! :hmm:

Ah tl:dr...but was religion mentioned?

No, it wasn't mentioned. Yet, he's decrying porn and video games as an intellectual pursuit and forgetting to mention religion. Religion has no place in logical debate or degree-granting institutions.

K. I still think the leap between pr0n and religion was kinda random; do I sense an uppity atheist, super-sensitive to 'religion'?
If there is anyone equally unintelligent than a religious zealot, its an atheist.

Just on that subject, do u think there is a difference between religion and faith? Religion and spirituality?

I'm not sensitive to religion, I just happen to think it should merely be taught as a part of history or metaphysical philosophy, not major academia.

As for your query, the differences lie in the semantics around the words.

You can have a religious-like belief without being a religious person.

Yet, you cannot have religion or spirituality without faith.

Faith is the word that bridges the gap between rationality and religion/spirituality.

There are differences between religion and spirituality, and there are commonalities. But, to say the two are completely separate is asinine.

You can have Spirituality without religion, but you can't have religion without spirituality. It's like saying all color-changing leaves start off as green. But not all green leaves change colors.

I'm determined to think that whatever viewpoint I have, you have the opposing one.

Be as determined as u liek, it wont necessarily manifest into reality ;)

Bullshit. Please explain how you can understand the history and political situation of any region without understanding it's religion? Hell throw in economics for such places as Latin America (Liberation Theology).

Liberation theology is a school of theology within Christianity, particularly in the Roman Catholic Church. It emphasises the Christian mission to bring justice to the poor and oppressed, particularly through political activism. Its theologians consider sin the root source of poverty, recognizing sin as exploitive capitalism and class war by the rich against the poor.

You cannot lump all academic activities pertaining to religion in the same basket.

Yes, religious indoctrination is schools is despicable, however there are many interesting theological debates/seminars that are conducted in academic establishments.

Anyhow, studying Augustine, Baha'uddine, and Ali Bin Abi Taleb is certainly much more enriching than "taking a course" in how to watch two people copulate and/or master the art of a Zerg rush.

Half of that statement is correct. :bergman:

Who doesn't like watching a Zerg Rush?!?! :wtf:

Judging from the activities of our countries politicians, I was under the impression that porn courses were being taught at the colleges and universities all along.

They just call it Political science and constitutional law.

Hey if you want to watch hours of anal rape, go watch C-Span when they film Congressional Hearings.
