Story for the day (Sunday, if no one replies I'll kill Dr. Dave.)

CaptainWacky

I want to smell dark matter
He felt himself fading and it wasn't at all like going to sleep, that was a lie. It was better and worse at the same time, terrible and euphoric, and he didn't even noticed that his bedroom and indeed his body were gone and he exist as pure consciousness and his thoughts formed shapes around him in colours he had never seen before and they danced for him and he was among them.

What now, he thought and it made a sphere of a colour which he could only describe as being "orange, but more than orange" and that didn't do it justice. Then he was inside it. Then he was falling.

At first he was falling into nothing he only knew he was falling because he knew he was falling but as it went on a wall began to form around him, an old wall, older he knew, the world itself and there were gates in it and he stopped at the first, he did not know how but he was stopped. And there was a demon there.

"Enter my realm or continue to fall and risk greater torment," said the demon, with a toothless smile, but he knew there were things in the realm which did have teeth, so he chose to go on falling.

And he fell and fell and fell and just when he thought he could fall no more he fell more and this was worse, he thought, then any torment a demon could put on him, for he could no longer imagine the wondrous shapes and colours, all was bound in by the wall. And then suddenly he was stopped at a new gate and a greater demon was before him, a demon of such size that he knew it couldn't even fit in the tunnel and yet it did.

"Do you judge by appearance, human? Enter my realm or continue your descent." And he did judge by appearance and decided he wanted nothing of that demon and he fell again.

He tried to think while he fell but not even ordinary thoughts could live within the wall.

The third demon was small and weak looking and it begger him to enter its realm. "You must rest human. Rest here." But he wanted to keep going, just in case of what he did not know, and the demon nodded sadly as he made his choice and then he fell.

In the minutes/hours/years that followed he managed to make a thought. That thought was that he wished he'd entered one of the three realms. And then he was at the fourth.

The demon was a snake and it was the purest evil he had ever felt yet he was tempted almost to enter its realm because he did not know how much longer he would fall otherwise but the snaked cackled "yes my child, come to me, forever" and just like that he had chosen to fall again.

He came too at the bottom of the tunnel. There was a bottom. There were bones. He could lie there, he realised, and he could die. Or he could enter the final realm of them all, and this gate was guardless. And he lay there for a long time until finally he started to crawl just to see if he could and then he was in at the gate and he strained trying to see what was in but he could not. The only way to find out, he knew, we to enter. And he did.

He sat up with a start on his bed, the familiar walls of his bedroom around him, the empty bottle still lying on the bedside table, his journey complete. He wished he'd taken the third gate.
