I want to smell dark matter
I had to keep telling Delta to keep his head down. I was getting worried about him. It was almost as if he wanted the enemy to see him. Did he want to draw them out for a fight...or did he want to die? I'd seen it before. Many times. With Beta and Gamma dead and us out in no one's land, far from base, I could understand perfectly why Delta might have wanted it all to end. I felt the same way sometimes. But we had to keep going. Every troop counts. We had to get back, deliver our intel, then get healed up and go out again to fight another day. I decided the best thing to do was to get him talking.
"You got a girl back home, Delta?" I asked.
"What?" asked Delta, his eyes darting about. He was going crazy.
"What, SIR!" I corrected him.
"Sorry sir!" he said.
"Just call me...Alpha," I said. I had almost decided to tell him my real name, but changed my mind at the last moment. Some discipline had to be maintained. Nobody knew anyone's name and that was the way the people in charge liked it.
"Could you repeat the question, Alpha?"
"I asked if you have a girl back home, Delta."
"No...I do have a sexbot though." I laughed, not cruelly.
"Well, that's something worth getting back to," I said.
"Yes, sir...Alpha. Do you have a girl back home?"
"Yes," I said and would say no more. We went of for silence for three hours...and then we some them, in the distance. The enemy. Two bugs. Big ones. The land was flat. They could see us too. And there was nowhere to hide. Delta was firing before I'd even given the order. Perhaps if he hadn't, we could have worked something out. The bugs are not entirely unreasonable, despite what headquarters say. Perhaps we could have agree to go our seperate ways. They were obviously in a similar situation to us. But it was not to be.
The battle was fierce and short. I hit the smaller of the two in the legs...three of his legs. The larger evaded our shots and kept the pressure on us, getting closer and closer...then Delta jumped in front of my and shot the larger bug square in the chest...just at the bug got off a shot that hit Delta in the shoulder, putting him down.
"It's not bad," he said, with a smile. "It's not..." But the wound was like nothing I'd ever seen before. I went to the two bugs. Both were still alive. The smaller, and I could now see the younger, was in a state. I took its weapon and cracked it over the head, knocking it out. The larger was hit bad. He wasn't going to make it, but I had to know about Delta's wound.
"Your weapon...what did it do to him?" I asked.
"Hsss..." the bug was in pain, but wanted to tell me, I could see. I waited. "I'm sorry, Earthling. It's a new weapon...the scientists, they don't stop. More and more terrible the weapons they make for us...one shot is enough. Wherever it hits. He shall die in agony. I'm sorry it had to be this way." I nodded grimly and finished him off with a shot to the head. I returned to Delta.
"You killed it...good," said Delta. He did not look to be in pain. Yet.
"It is never good to kill another lifeform," I said.
"Alpha...you can have my sexbot, if you want. Just think of me while you do it," he said. I laughed.
"You're the last thing I'd think of during sex."
"And you have a wife...good...that's good...it hurts. My...my everything..."
"I never found out your name, kid," I said, quickly. It felt important. All I knew of him was that he had a sexbot.
"It hurts...so much...help me...help me..."
I shot him in the head. He died instantly. I never knew his name.
The smaller bug regained consciousness shortly.
"Are you going to kill me?" it hissed.
"I'm taking you back to headquarters as my prisoner," I said.
"A fate worse than death!" I scoffed at this. He must have been even younger than Delta.
"You should be thanking me," I said, binding its arm. "For you the war's over. You're the lucky one."
