The NBA released the findings of its investigation after interviewing 320 current and former Suns employees ... and determined Sarver said the N-word at least five times "when recounting the statements of others." It's worth noting -- the league says Sarver's use of the N-word was not motivated by racial hate or prejudice. The league also concluded Sarver did not treat female employees equally and made inappropriate comments about their appearance. The NBA also states Sarver engaged in inappropriate physical conduct toward male employees.

'The walls were closing in': Inside the seven days that led to Phoenix Suns owner Robert Sarver's stunning exit

It looks like all the world like a glorious, carefree day at the Silverleaf Country Club in Scottsdale, Arizona. The setting for the charity golf tournament benefiting Phoenix Suns stars Chris Paul's and Devin Booker's foundations -- the private, Tom Weiskopf-designed course in the canyons of the McDowell Mountains -- is Phoenix high life at its finest. Julius Erving is there. So are PGA pro Jon Rahm and former Cleveland Cavalier JR Smith. Golf carts buzz through the majestic Sonoran Desert. Don Julio 1942 trophies are handed out to the winning foursome, led by Phoenix Mercury star Diana Taurasi. Paul and his wife, Jada, are seen dancing at the end of the night. But pictures can tell only part of the story. Or, in this case, a reel viewed by more than 339,000 of Paul's 11.5 million Instagram followers. Not even a hint of the chaos that had been going on behind the scenes: a high-stakes, multibillion-dollar game of chicken -- one that Paul, Booker and various power brokers around the league had participated in, which finally convinced Sarver to sell his franchises instead of fight the one-year suspension levied on him by NBA commissioner Adam Silver.

Phoenix Suns likely to fetch record sale price for an NBA team, bankers say

As Robert Sarver prepares to sell the NBA's Phoenix Suns and the WNBA's Phoenix Mercury, investment bank officials who have managed the sales of professional sports franchises told ESPN that they expect the transaction's final price to set a record. "It'll be the highest price ever paid for an NBA team," one investment bank official said. Sarver has chosen the investment bank Moelis & Company to oversee the sale, a source close to the situation confirmed to ESPN. Sportico reported Monday that Sarver had chosen the bank. A spokesperson for Moelis & Co. declined to comment. Moelis served as a financial adviser in the May 2022 sale of Chelsea Football Club to a consortium led by Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital, which bought the team for $5.3 billion. Moelis also acted as a financial adviser in the 2015 sale of the Atlanta Hawks to a group led by Tony Ressler for $850 million.

The Robert Sarver Situation Must Prompt Reform Across Pro Sports

Sarver’s ownership has had real human costs for the sport and needs to prompt permanent changes in how the NBA and the other major sports deal with owners. Sarver is hardly the only example of egregious owner misconduct, but he should become the example that drives a change. It’s important to absorb the human toll of Sarver’s tenure. Writing on the Culture in Sports weblog, Dr. Jeremy Piasecki, whose expertise is in toxic work environments, calculated the more than 17 years of hostility directed at African Americans and women as 6,200 days of documented racialized, misogynistic and awful behavior coming from Sarver and others in his workplace. That brings us to the players and their union, the National Basketball Players Association (NBPA). Sarver’s conduct had to have spilled over into the players’ lives and careers and creates some critical questions on where this goes next and how a solution can be reached that will protect the NBA, its players, and all of its employees from future Sarvers. It is the players who wield the most influence and who have the most options at their disposal to create a better future.

NBA owners let others do the work to get Robert Sarver to sell Suns, Mercury | Opinion

In a perfect world, NBA owners would have taken matters into their own hands and voted to oust Phoenix Suns and Phoenix Mercury owner Robert Sarver. But as NBA commissioner Adam Silver said last week when addressing Sarver’s one-year suspension and $10 million fine for repugnant workplace behavior, the process of forcing Sarver to sell “is a very involved process. ”Among 29 other NBA owners, there was little appetite to take a formal vote to begin that process. “There was no discussion around the process of removing him,” Silveracknowledged. Golden State’s Draymond Green said, “So what I would say is why don't we pose a vote?” I get Green’s point. He wants to know who stands where. But there’s no reason – from the NBA’s standpoint – to take a vote when the outcome is known.
