Swimming in Pools with African Americans

Unluckiest Charm in the Box
Why do so many people have an issue with this? A colleague of mines just got back from vacation. She tells me that the resort she was in had a really large pool. There were many people there (mainly whites and asians) spashing around in the water. Everyone was wading in the pool seemingly enjoying themselves, until a group of black people showed up. She stated that they weren't rowdy or cauing any kind of disturbances or anything, but as soon as they all started to climb into the pool, slowly everyone else all started getting out.

Within an hour or so, no one was left in the pool but them (these african americans guys).

This is not the first time I have heard stories like this either. It was always my belief that most black guys dont like swimming anyways!

Maybe because the black people are traditionally considered poor swimmers, the people in the pool don't want to be responsible for rendering aid should it become necessary. You know, like not wanting to be called upon to open the emergency exit on an airplane.

Or people are racist and don't want any of that 'black' on them. Where's luci? I'm sure he thinks he knows.

Black people swim where I do and no one seems to have a problem with it. I don't know about resorts as I don't go to those.

However, there is some clue to what may have happened in your report.

Fact one, a group of people had already been in the pool for some time.

Fact two, another group of people showed up and began swimming in the pool.

Fact three, afterwards, the first group of people that had already been in the pool for some time prior to the arrival of the second group, slowly left over the space of about an hour.

It could be that the people that left had already spent as much time in the pool as they wanted to spend in the pool. Perhaps they had other things to do than be in the pool. Are they not allowed to leave the pool?

That a black group of people showed up at some point prior to their leaving does not indicate their leaving was racially motivated.

I do know the black people that swim where I do don't like to get their hair wet. It is something about the lack of oil in their hair/scalp and chlorine water is pretty harsh on hair anyway. As we are an aqua exercise group we don't generally submerge in the pool but the black people who are in the group usually wear a bathing cap to protect their hair.
