The plan is to weld the US, Canada, and Mexico into one North American Union, to counter the European Union.

The problem is that to get it to work, US and Canadian working class people must lower their standards of living to match working class living standards in Mexico.

I blame Canada.

The Euro works well, because all the countries are so intertwined with each other and there's so much overlap, from what I've heard. I've talked to people that have traveled there, and aside from those who love collecting coins *cough* many got annoyed with having to trade money everytime they changed from one country to the next (Which is fairly easy to do).

Secondly (and probably more important) these countries were pretty balanced in relation to each other. I doubt Spain was much worse off that, let's say, France the way Mexico is in relation to America. Bring in a union and it'll ruin the American economy as well as everyone other country that tried in their currency to the US dollar. :bergman:

It's a good concept, but I don't think we're ready for it.
Look at the immigration issues we Americans have. Such a union would essentially open up the border, and pave the way for a mass 'loss of jobs'. Sure, some might be lost, but the entire immigration issue's a pretty sticky one.

Even if this did work, to prevent immigration down the line, you'd need to secure the southern Mexican border...

The way to get this to work is to work with Mexico (and Central America) and get them up to First World standards as quickly as possible. Which will still take decades, IMO.

Meanwhile, the South American Union will be chugging along...
