I don't like that particular song. Their other material is much better, they probably chose to commercialize COB because it's more radio-friendly than their other songs.

Try listening to "Missed me", "My Alcoholic Friends", "Sex changes", and the "The Jeep Song" (respectively).
 
Are they considered "alternative"?

I dunno, they seem to have that melancholy-puppet-theater spoor about them, which, when you think about it, is little more than Sprockets from a bygone era. I find it pretentious..."Oh look at me I'm a tragic clown aren't I fascinating" etc etc

Of course that last part describes about half of all 20th century music.
