The Sad Potroast

Laker_Girl

Mrs. Big Dick McGee
So I really love potroast, my mom maks THE BEST potroast but I thought I'd just crockpot it because it seem so easy and everyone says it's so easy and the recipe book made it look so easy so that's what I did. I got up at 7:00A so that the potroast could slow cook for 10 hours. I prepared it and all that good stuff and it seemed to be going well right up until my fiancee woke up and said, "Something smells weird." I let the potroast be because that's what you're supposed to do but I fretted, smelling weird is not a good sign.

By dinner time my potroast didn't look like my mom's and it did, in fact, smell weird. We ate El Pollo Loco for dinner. I'm getting my mom's recipe for next time.

^^YES! Oh God, I'm not that horrible of a cook.

And I don't know why it smelled weird, it didn't smell weird to me until the very end.

Check the crockpot itself --seriously (if it's electric, check the cord & make sure nothing's melted or charred, and see if it smells at all after you clean it.)

Good advice.

It would smell if the food in the crockpot was burned on the bottom - which is hard to do in a crockpot - unless there is no liquid in the pot, it is turned on high and has been on high without liquid for a very long time.

It didn't burn to the bottom and my crockpot is new, I just jacked up the potroast by not following my mom's recipe. Won't happen again, I can tell you that!

Its just hard to jack up pot roast. It is meat and vegetables, some seasoning and water. Its just stew with less water cooked in the oven instead of on the stove top.

Did you investigate the sad pot roast to find out what went wrong? Just not following your mom's recipe is not enough.

You do know what she's really talking about right?

That is the problem with it right there. Not Scotch or Irish Whiskey. It is Bourbon, dear. Bourbon.

Was the meat a bit on the gamey side? Had it gone over it's pull date? Otherwise, I can't imagine what could have gone wrong. Crockpot pot roast is a very easy meal to make. When I cook in the crockpot my dogs who are confined to the kitchen salivate all night long. I'm mean that way.

No, the meat was fine I just can't make a potroast I guess. I'll try it again and I'll report the results here.

Post your recipe too. Are you sure she is making it in a crockpot?

The way I cook pot roast is real simple, and usually in the oven -
clean, peel if necessary, string if necessary, and chop into big chunks:
tomatoes, potatoes, celery, carrots then set aside;
mix flour, salt and pepper on a plate;
wash the roast, poke it a few hundred times with a fork;
heat a little oil in the bottom of the dutch oven on top of the stove;
dredge the roast in the flour/salt/pepper mixture;
brown the roast in the hot oil in the dutch oven on top of the stove;
turn off the burner under the dutch oven;
place the vegetables in the pan around the roast, potatoes on the bottom;
sprinkle a package or two of dried onion-mushroom soup mix over the veggies and roast;
pour in enough liquid to cover the roast and veggies - liquid can be:
a can or two of cream of mushroom soup and water, or
water only, or
beef broth only, or
beef broth and a can or two of cream of mushroom soup, or
water and soy sauce, or
water and Worchestershire Sauce, or
a packet or two of brown gravy mix sprinkled over the roast and veggies too, and plain water or beef broth -
you get the idea
then
put the lid on the dutch oven and put it in the oven at approx 400 degrees and
bake for about 3 hours.
Check the roast for doneness and adjust cooking time as needed and add more liquid if needed.
Take the lid off the dutch oven the last 1/2 hour or so.

Pot roast is alot like stew. There is no absolute right way to make it - just however it tastes best to you and your dining companions.
