What is it with tv shows and media useing the term "viral" when referring to videos or some other wide spread thing.

I'm watching this episode of CSI:NY and one of the characters talks about how this party went viral.

Do people other then on tv shows or in the media use the term viral? I can't recall hearing the term much outside of this context.
 
Before "viral" it was "meme" and before "meme" it was "popular".

It's the buzzword of the moment for people who want to sound informed about the internet. They use it a lot on the news over here, especially to justify those "and finally... today a tree got stuck in a cat" type stories. If the video can be said to have "gone viral" then that makes it news, right?

What I hate is when there's "viral videos" which are called "viral videos" BEFORE they've gone "viral" like if there's a video promoting some tv show about horses and it's a video of a horse kicking a child to death but the video is title "NEW HORSE KICKING CHILD TO DEATH VIRAL!" but it hasn't earned the right to be called a viral yet! If you know what I mean.
 
Hi CaptainWacky, what is the length of your erect penis? And your erect penis width? How much semen do you usually ejaculate? The volume of your semen typical when you ejaculate? The typical distance that you have often ejaculated your semen to a distance away from the tip of your penis head?
