I can understand the fears over the conservatives hounding them over every little thing now, but if it were more profitable, the producers probably wouldn't care until they got arrested or something.
Maybe it's just the UK economic model. In the US, it makes more sense to do the live feeds, because it's a revenue generator. The crew is already there anyway, filming everything. It doesn't cost that much more to have a small side crew, picking scenes to show live (4 cams, but 2 cams are focusing on 1 scene each), and stream it to subscribers.
Real.com sells the SuperPass subscription for US$40 for a 3-month period (with automatic renewal), and they make it a pain in the ass to unsubscribe, so they probably make more money than they should. I've forgotten to unsub in time more than once.
