I remember reading that it was going to start with the underwater probe thing finding the wreckage of flight 815...but that was the start of episode 2. Maybe if they had did that they would have had the Daniel crying bit in ep 1 then when he appears at the end we'd think "oh, that's the guy who was crying" and that would have been kind of something I suppose.
