I want to smell dark matter
He was in school and he was late, very late, but people kept stopping him and asking him thing, including Darth Vader asking about lightbulbs. He was annoyed, didn't they know he had to be in class? Didn't THEY have to be in class too? The fools! He ignored them, he pushed them away, he RAN...
He was in a jungle. What the fuck was he doing in a jungle? Oh yeah, avoiding King Kong. The great ape's massive paw squashed a tree beside him as he dodged away. He cartwheeled out of the way of a Kong foot and dived off a cliff to escape for good. It felt great, flying through the air, the wind in his hair...then he hit the river below. It didn't hurt! Hmm. No time to think, have to avoid Kong!
How did he do that, he wondered to himself. The jungle had gone, he was just standing...somewhere. Was he ever standing? How did he get so agile avoiding...what was it again, Godzilla? He tried to look around to see but there was nothing. He was stuck, somewhere.
Bed! That was it, he must be in bed. He always ended up back in bed. His bedroom was around him now. What time was it anyway? Hmm, all the numbers had fallen off the clock. Well, no matter, he'd just wait and when it was time to get up he'd know. He shut his eyes again.
Shutting his eyes made everything disappear, but not in the way it usually did. EVERYTHING, had disappeared.
What had he been doing?
He was in school, right? Late for class. No, he was having a dream, he was in a jungle...what year was it? Wasn't there something important he had to do, wasn't there some time limit he was competing against? What was going on?
What year was it anyway?
This was really worrying. He tried to open his eyes. He thought he had, but there was still nothing. And not just darkness, there was literally nothing.
He couldn't hear anything either. Couldn't feel, couldn't move...what was going on?
He was just floating, he had no body. No, he wasn't even floating, there was no sensation at all.
He was nothing. He had always kind of known that.
But wasn't there something...
Things were rushing around all around him. He didn't like it. His childhood, of course, he remembered...some of it anyway. Other stuff didn't seem familiar. That hadn't happened yet, surely! He was still in school! But it must have happened, he was there. He had been there when it had happened. Yes, of course it happened, it was a memory...his memories was coming back. At least he could see things again, though only his thoughts...
He was dying. Of course. How could he have forgotten that? Six months to live...no, less.
He was lying in his bed, his friends and family all around him...NO! That COULDN'T have happened. If he'd died, he wouldn't be thinking. He wouldn't be!
Then suddenly he could feel again. A cold, metallic surface. And he could hear...a cold, metallic noise.
He could see. But it was different. Clearer, yet artificial. He was in a labratory. There was a robot standing in front of him.
"What age am I?" he asked, just to be sure.
"26. Though, technically..."
"I'm not in school, I'm dying...I'm dead?"
"You died. We brought you back." The robot was smiling. That looked strange.
He tried to move now. He was scared, but he had to move. His body didn't feel the same. It was his body, wasn't it? He moved his hand past his face.
He had a robot hand.
He had a robot body.
"We put your brain in a robot body," the robot explained. "You have a second chance at life. A very different life."
He looked at the robot for a long time. He found, to his astonishment, that he could zoom in with his new, robot eyes. He could see details he would never have noticed before. It was terrifying.
"I want to go home," he sobbed.
