They're only children, he heard a part of himself say. But no, he had to tell himself, they're NOT children. They represent something terrible. They are not natural. They are harbingers of the apocolypse.

"Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live."

He took the knife out. It was possible one of the teachers could be awake. He had to be ready. He had to be...he heard an alarm, a magical alarm. Curse them! He disappeared into the shadows.

His skill was not magical, it wasn't. He had been born with it, given it by the lord. He hadn't trained, he went to no institution to learn how to increase his strength...he used it only to do the Lord's work. That was his gift. He carried out penace after every time he used the power. He was not a witch, he wasn't like them...that's what his Master had told him anyway. But these children, they were born with magical ability, they must be, otherwise all children would be capable of learning witchcraft. He disagreed with his master about that, privately. In a way, they were the same as him. He didn't blame the children for what they were. It was the teachers, so evil men, who were to blame, teaching the children to use their magic in wicked ways...just as his master taught him...but it wasn't the same!

Two teaches walked right by him and didn't see him. They had their wands out. Those instruments would do them no good. He hoped he got to kill a few of the teachers on the way out. He headed to the boy's room.

This boy, the brightest student of all. He was the assassin's target. He would be the sacrifice his master required. An example would be made of him. When he died, the other children would see that they were not safe. He would bring this institution down. And all it would take was the death of one boy. He entered the room.

He was just a boy. No, don't think like that, he wasn't. He was...

There was a giant standing over the boy's bead. Half human, half machine. A monstrosity.

Figor.

He'd heard the tales. How could he have got to the boy's room so quickly? He was kept in the basement. Magic! They had transported him to the room. They knew, knew the boy was the target. He had been a fool, he had let his Master down...and he couldn't even kill Figor, with such a small knife. Unless...flesh was showing, on his back. If he could just get behind the giant, surely Figor couldn't see him, he was still cloaked...

"Figor doesn't like to kill, but he will," said a voice. It came from Figor! Impossible! He couldn't talk, could he? He moved behind him. He still wasn't moving. He lunged forward with the knife...

Figor span round. The knife was deflected off his chest plate. Figure grabbed a hold of the assassin around the neck.

It was the boy. He had been hiding under the bed. He had spoken. He wasn't just a boy, he was evil! His master had been right, how could he have ever doubt him! Figor hit him once, over the head.

When he woke he was in Figor's basement, chained to a table in front of the stoic giant, a prisoner.

"Hello there," came a voice. Oh no, it was him. The most evil wizard of all. The school's headmaster. Grumblebore!
