"I thought you'd never wake up," he said, in the morning.
"You watched me all night," she said. Not a question. She seemed sadly resigned to it.
"I don't have to sleep, not anymore," he said. "Sometimes I try to...sometimes I even think I manage to do it...but I don't know. I think my mind just wanders."
"Are you going to let me get out of bed?" she asked. He was sitting right next to her.
"Oh, of course," he said. He got up and walked into another room. He felt strange. He didn't feel how he'd thought he would. She came out of the room.
"So is this my life now?" she asked. "You, studying me?"
"I'll leave you alone if you want," he said.
"You shouldn't even have to ask, you should be leaving me alone by default," she said. She was a fighter.
"I feel strange," he said. "Like...like I'm human again. But it's not good. Not like I thought it would be."
"How horrible for you."
"I feel like there's a big slab of raw meat behind my forehead where my brain should be."
"You don't have a forehead. You have the face of a squid. A big hideous fucking squid."
"I have a forehead under there...I can still feel it. But nothing feels real anymore. It's you. The first real person I've talked to in months. You make me feel human again and I never much liked being human. I'm not human. I feel less...too little. I can't even speak." It was true. Words wre fading from him. Only primal feelings remained.
"What do you want from me? You want me to make you feel better about how you've killed everyone?"
"I didn't have a choice!"
"You sicken me. I should kill you."
"That won't work..."
She went into the kitchen of the house, looking for something to stab him with. "DURR, I'M A FUCKING DUMB SQUID WITH A SLAB OF MEAT IN ITS BRAIN," she said, angrily stabbing him with a knife. It did not hurt him.
"I am more than human," he said. Oil shot right into her face. She fell. She'd been immune before, but now she'd angered him. He hadn't wanted to do it. It had been instinct. He remembered killing so many lesser beings in his day...
He remembered feasting on flesh.
No,he couldn't do it. He couldn't eat her...could he?
He didn't want to be a man anymore. Maybe he had to embrace being the monster.
