I want to smell dark matter
The Earth got closer to the light. Maybe it was thousands of years away, but every moment brought them closer. And then the Earth realised something. The light was moving too. Moving towards the Earth. The Earth and the light were moving to meet each other, the only objects in the universe. They would meet. The Earth had a purpose now. All its parts were working to this single goal. To meet the light.

The light changed shape as it drew neither. Was there something familiar about it? The Earth could hear a tiny, ancient voice it hadn't listened to for a long tme. It was the old Squidgod. What was it saying?

"The starwhale."

Of course. The light was the starwhale. Finally they would meet.

Closer and closer. The Starwhale was huge, as large as the Earth itself. It did look like a whale, but more. There were shapes growing from its great back. Cities? It was hardy to see. It had a mouth but it did not speak from it. Instead it and the Earth spoke to each other with their great minds.

"Well met, Earth," said the Starwhale. "You who was once the SquidKing."
"I am so much more than that," said the Earth.
"I feel it in you. And yet compared to me you are young. I have been roaming the galaxy for billions of years now. I have seen things you could never imagine."
"What did you do with the stars?"
"Merely darkened them. They are still there. In this area of space however they cannot be seen. This is to give me an advantage, should it come to combat."
"I don't know if it will come to that."
"Tell me the truth. Did you set out to kill me?"
"Yes. But that was so long ago. I don't know what I want now. Perhaps I just want someone to talk to."
"I see you have taken all life on Earth and made it part of you. Clever. Yet you keep one by your side. Why?"
"A reminder, I think."
"You should kill her. It would show me how stong you are."
"You are evil, starwhale."
"I am what I am. I have consumed planets on my voyage. Does that frighten you, planet?"
"Was there other life?"
"Ah. You have travelled the stars but not encountered other life yet."
"I was looking for you. I didn't have time. There are cities on your back."
"Yes. I took some humans with me when I went to the stars. I let them develop a civilisation on my back. I forgot they were there, to tell you the truth. They will have developed quite differently from the humans you once knew."
"So there is no other life. Only on Earth. All life comes from me. I am the source."
"You must have thought about it. How Gods were born on the Earth, Gods like you and I. Gods who have now reached the stars. And yet it seems the universe is empty other than use."
"Is it?"
"I...I did pick up travellers along the way. I promised to find them a new home. In truth I didn't even try to find them one. I had other things on my mind. They are still in me, frozen in time. I could let them out now."

And then the Starwhale opened its great mouth for the first time. And from it flew a spaceship.
