I want to smell dark matter
He had been the Time Demon. The master of all time. He'd never wanted power, not really. He'd just wanted a good time. And he could do that by resetting time every time things didn't go his way. By starting over. He'd watched amused as the other Gods had fought each other on the early earth. The Squid God. The Great Whale who would become the StarWhale. The Brown Entity. The Mist. The Blood Dog. The Army Of Sand. And more, so many more. He'd watched them all die. Any time they'd come near him, he'd time-jumped to escape. They couldn't touch him. None of them. Until the StarWhale made a box. A time box. He'd trapped the Time Demon in it. The Time Demon hadn't even been worried, he'd grown so arrogant. He thought he could just return to a time before he'd been trapped in the box.
He had been wrong.
Whenever he tried to time jump he always ended up back in the box. It was as if he'd always been there. He couldn't understand it. He'd travel back a million years and he'd still be in the box. He'd travel to the beginning of time and he'd still be in the box. It was as if the box was the universe now.
But he waited. He trained his mind. He had a way out. He'd jump forward in time.
He'd never done it before. He'd never had to. But he knew it was possible. He just had to learn how. He had the time. He spent years on it. Finally he knew he could do it. He could travel forward in time...
He was still in the box.
He'd always be in the box.
He smashed his head against the side of the box. He couldn't die, of course, not from that. The Starwhale was keeping him alive, but for what?
Finally the Starwhale spoke to him.
"I have need of you, slave. I just destroyed a star I did not wish to destroy. Take me back to before I destroyed it."
"No. I'll never help you."
"Then I'll make your box smaller."
"...which star?"
He had to do whatever the Starwhale said. It was a cruel cruel life.
He lived in his box for a long time. He eventually realised that the Starwhale had forgotten about him. He just kept him there, strapped to his back, as he drifted through the stars. Stars the Time Demon could never see as he was trapped in his box.
Until one day the humans came to him.
"You are real," said the human leader, a female.
"I...am I real?" asked the Time Demon, who had not spoken or thought for a long time.
"Can you help us? Can you help us kill it?"
"The Starwhale? Yes. Yes. Please yes."
"No," said the leader. "The Starwhale is our home. It's the great destroyer that must die."
"Speak sense."
"An old foe of the Starwhale has come here for a final confrontation that may destroy the whole galaxy."
"The Blood Dog still lives?!"
"What? No. It's the Earth. THE DREADED EARTH."
"I don't understand...the whole planet?"
"The Starwhale called it...the Squidgod?"
The Time Demon Smiled.
"Yes," he said. "Yes I will help you."
