I want to smell dark matter
There was an explosion in his head as the rock hit. An explosion of squid It was like instinct kicked in and suddenly he was himself again. Suddenly there was ink shooting out of him and into Chloe. He couldn't stop it, he wasn't even aware it was happening intil Chloe's eyes had already gone blank. She sunk into his arms. He could feel her mind. He knew everything.
Her entire history played before his eyes. She's felt different after she'd tried to return to her life, of course she had. She'd been isolated from other people for a long time. But eventually she'd went out into the world. She'd met a woman and fallen in love. She'd thought she could be normal. They'd gotten married...but years were going by and Chloe still wasn't aging. She'd been a teenager when they had first met, he remembered, all those years ago in another universe. She maybe looked a few years older, in her early twenties, now. And she'd looked that way for over two and a half centuries. She'd noticed and gone into a panic. She'd called on the Time Demon but of course he hadn't come. He would never come when he was wanted. She'd ran out on her wife. She'd thought herself a freak. At first she tried not to get involved with humans, but she'd always end up going back to them. Eventually she fell in love again, with a man this time. She fooled herslef into thinking she could pass for normal by eventually using make-up and dyeing her hair to make herself older. She'd even had children.
But years went by and eventually her husband died and she had to fake her own death. And she watched her children grow up and die. And she began to resent and hate other humans. She hated them for dying. She hated them for being so weak. And still in her head there was the memory of spending a million years in space with a living planet...
She had killed people, yes, but she'd had no choice. They had found out her secret and wanted to do experiments on her to discover the source of her power. The Squidinator didn't know why she hated herself for killing them. They had deserved it. He put that thought in her head and released her from control.
"I used to think I was good," she said.
"Heroes either die young or live long enough to see themself become villains," said the Squidinator. He didn't know where he'd taken that from.
"I thought you'd kill me," she said.
"I know," he said. He'd seen it in her head. Her plan hadn't been to kill him at all, but to provoke him into using his powers and killing her. She believed it to be the only way she could die.
"Will you?"
"Kill you?"
"Yes."
"No. And truthfully I don't know if I could. Like you said, you're a living paradox."
"Did the Time Demon plan this?"
"Honestly, now that I think about it...yes. He's into long term planning. For some reason he wants you like this."
"Where is he now?"
"Probably travelled to the future to kill the Starwhale. After building an army or something. I don't know. But he wants to be the only being in the universe. I always got that impression from him."
"Will you come out of your hole and help me kill him?"
"I don't see how we can ever..."
"Will you come out of your hole and keep me company?"
"...yes."
And he took her hand and left her whole. They sat there, on the ground, at the edge of the whole, watching the sunrise, as it was happening just as they had come out of the darkness. A new day had begun.
"I'm not going to kill anyway this time," said the Squidinator. He didn't really believe it. Chloe laughed.
"You always say that," she sighed.
