I want to smell dark matter
And so he came to it at last. A direct tunnel to the Time Demon's location. The Squidinator knew it was a trap. But he didn't know who was being trapped. Was it him? Was it the Time Demon? Chloe? Was it all three, each laying traps for the hour? He laughed at the thought.
Chloe was standing there when he arrived. She smiled, but it was not warm.
"So you sleep with me once and go away to become a squid again,"she said.
"I don't have time for this," said the Squidinator and he entered Chloe's head. He was surprised by how easy it was.
Chloe saw one of her relatives. She couldn't remember the girl's name, but she remembered talking to her on a park bench once. Over a thousand years ago. How could it be the same girl?
"It's me," she said. "I'm just like you, Chloe. Immortal. And I've lived all these years as a good person. I haven't killed eight thousand, seven hundred and twenty two people like you have."
"No," said Chloe, struggling to breathe. "You can't be like me...it's just me...everything I've done...I couldn't help it...I had to be this way...it was destiny...I'm meant for this...no." She collapsed on the ground crying. The Squidinator stepped over her.
"Women, eh," he said to the Time Demon, who was aiming a massive gun at the Squidinator.
"I'm genderless," said the Time Demon. "So no I don't know what you meant. But how cruel of you. Chloe has waited for this for two thousand years and you cast her aside as if she is nothing?"
"She is a child compared to us. We have lived since the beginning of Earth. We know things. We know secrets."
"This gun I hold, that's a secret. It can kill you."
"No, it can't."
"Well, no, but it will freeze you in time. You'll watch the universe die around you. And you'll be unable to ever touch it again."
"You don't want me frozen in time. You want my help."
"And you mine."
At this point the Squidinator was surprised to find Chloe attempting to knife him to death. The knife went in and out of his back four times before he noticed. She could never kill him this way, of course, but he was surprised she had recovered from his illusion so quickly.
"DIE, YOU PIG," she screamed.
"You know I won't," he said. "How did you get up?"
"I lived in a stupor with you for a million years. You have no power over my mind anymore," she said. She stopped stabbing him at last and licked some of the blood off her knife. The Time Demon smiled.
"How delightful!" he said. "Now, let us get down to business..."
"NOT YET," came a voice. Where did it come from? It came from everywhere. The ground shook. They were deep beneath the Earth yet it was shaping. Something was shaking the Earth.
The Starwhale.
"You," said the Squidinator.
"AT LAST I HAVE RETURNED. AND NOW I WILL FIND OUT WHAT YOU HAVE TAKEN FROM ME. AND I WILL TAKE YOUR LIVES."
"We...we can kill you," said the Time Demon, but it did not sound so sure.
Then they heard laughter.
"I HAVE NOT COME ALONE," said the Starwhale in their heads. "I HAVE BROUGHT MY STARBROOD."
And they saw it, in their heads. Everyone on Earth saw it. Above the Earth, the dark sky the Starwhale circled the planet...with an army of its own children. Hundreds and hundreds of them.
And they attacked.
