I want to smell dark matter
Chloe hadn't really listened to people for a long time. She'd grown used to ignoring them, to not caring what they had to say. She'd seen more people come and ago than any other person on Earth. She'd seen them live and she'd seen them die. They always died. She didn't. So it was easy to grow apart from humanity.

But seeing them all panic, as their whole world was falling apart...that was different. She felt somethig now. Maybe it was because while people came and went, she'd thought there would always be the human race. She remembered the millions of years she spent as a slave in the dead timeline. Sometimes she'd dream she was still there and wake up expecting to see the Squidinator sitting on his throne. She'd feel the horror of that loss of control and yet...sometimes she almost wished she'd go back to that. It was simpler. But she hated herself every time she thought that. She'd been alone in that timeline, the only slave with something of a mind. The rest had not been human.

In the last two thousand years she'd been surrounded by humans again and she did not want them to go away.

A small boy fell almost as her feet. He was crying.

She'd had children once.

"Where are your mummy and daddy?" she asked. The words felt strange coming out of her mouth.

"They...they were in the car when the ground shook...mummy got me out but then it fell...I need help."

"Take me to them." The boy led her to a bridge. The car had been at the edge, he said. It had fallen.

"Help them!" he said. But how could she? It was burning below. They were dead.

"They're dead," she said. She'd forgotten how to be kind to children.

"Nooooo," he cried. She thought of pushing him off the bridge so he could be with them. She then laughed at the idea that there was an afterlife.

"Sorry," she said, as he looked up at her, tears in his eyes. "I don't know what to say."

They just stood there watching the car burn for a while. This was probably the wrong thing to do, she realised.

"You're thinking of snapping his neck, aren't you?" said a voice. She turned. The boy turned too then almost jumped into her arms in fear. It was the Time Demon. But he looked different. Older, somehow. Taller? She didn't know.

"I'm not coming with you," she said.

"We need you, Chloe," he said and for once he sounded sincere. "You could be our only hope of stopping the Starwhale. Of saving the world."

"You don't care about saving the world."

"No, I just want to kill the bitch. But you do care...so come with me and stop wasting your time here."

She knew he was right. She looked down at the boy.

"I'm sorry," she said and let him go and shoved him away. She stepped into the portal with the Time Demon without looking back.
