the robots from the future were haivng a hard time getting a human brain up and running
every time they tried the brains just seemed to give up
died
it was strange
like it was too much effort for the brains to think
maybe it was the current simulation, of 2020 Earth, that the robots were plugging the brains into that was the problem
something about it just made the brains go mad
like they were trappped
they couldn't function
they just died
so many dead brains
the robots burned the brains day and night while more grew
every one of them died
some produced meanginless static first
they finally got thoghts out of one
if you can call the thoughts

Charles Horse thought about his childhood. How he'd been wrong about everything. How he'd thought he was special. How he'd built up that belief in his head because he couldn't face the real world. How it had removed him from everything. How it had created a layer of unreality between his brain and the entire world. How he'd never developed properly because of it. How he'd been unable to truly like or enjoy aything because his brain was out of sync with reality, so he'd had to teach himself to lie. He'd gotten so good at it that sometimes he truly believed he liked the things he was pretending to like, but if he thought back to how it had started he'd always come to the conclusion that it had been a lie. And then it would be over. He coudn't feel anything again. Not a thing. So all that was left was a desire to go back in time. Do his life over. From the very start, and be a proper person this time. Be aware of what every other child had come to learn, that the world didn't exist just for them. That they weren't special. That things wouldn't magically became right in the end. That you had to make the effor to learn and grow and all you had were the things in the wold because those things were the only things that were real. He would go back. He would start over. He got older, and older, but part of him still believed that one day life would just reset. So nothing mattered for yet another reason, because he was living in what would become an aborted timeline.
But Charlese Horse never got to do his life over.
Charles Horse never got to do anything.

why was it always Charles Horse, the robots from the future wondered
it was like some kind of sick joke
the only human they could bring to life was one who never felt anything
a comletely broken mess of a man
they sighed and destoyed the grown Horse brain
burned it all away
all the while knowing that he would live again
eternally resurrected
the last remnant of humanity
ironic, really
in the end Charles Horse had both become special and got to do his life over again
he just didn't know it
