RIP Karl 1991-2014
1118: Alexios I Komnenos, Roman Emperor, dies. Alexios' cry for help to the west in the face of the Turks conquering Anatolia had been the spark that started the crusades; Alexios was a brilliant administrator and exploited the chaos caused by the passing crusaders to retake much of the coasts of Asia Minor and the western part of the peninsula. His son, Ioannese "The Beautiful" II Komnenos, who would continue the empire's restoration against the Turks, succeeded Alexios as Emperor of the Romans. Descendants of Alexios would reign in the Roman Empire and its splinter states for another 343 years, until its final fall to the Ottoman Turks.
1461: The Empire of Trebizond, the last sovereign piece of the Roman Empire, under its emperor, David Komnenos, surrenders to the Ottoman Turks under Mehmet II Fatih. The last of the Komneni are executed at Constantinople and the last piece of the ancient Greco-Roman world is conquered.
