NASA launches infrared Spitzer Space Telescope

infrared astronomy is the study of celestial objects by means of the infrared radiation they emit, in the wavelength range from about 1 micrometer to about 1 millimeter.

All objects, from trees and buildings on the earth to distant galaxies, emit infrared (IR) radiation. The study of such radiation from celestial objects is of particular importance for several reasons. Cosmic dust particles effectively obscure parts of the visible universe, such as the center of our galaxy, the Milky Way, but this dust is transparent in the IR wavelengths. Most of the energy radiated by objects ranging from interstellar matter to planets lies in the IR wavelengths; IR observations are therefore significant in studying asteroids, comets, planetary satellites, and interstellar dust clouds where stars are forming. Finally, because the expansion of the universe shifts energy to longer wavelengths, most of the visible radiation emitted by stars and galaxies during the early stages of the formation of the universe is now shifted to the IR range; studies of the most distant objects in the IR spectrum are necessary if astronomers are to understand how the universe was formed.

Singer and actress Aaliyah died in a plane crash in the Bahamas

ok, so maybe this isn't rocket science, but I was sorry about this - she was young and beautiful and just starting her career. She was showing potential in her work in Queen of the Damned and Romeo Must Die.

1718
New Orleans Founded

One of the few cities of the USA that has been under three flags, New Orleans has belonged to Spain, France, and the United States.

The French founded it in 1718 and named it in honour of the Duke of Orleans. In 1762, France ceded the city and the territory to Spain. In 1800, the territory was returned to France, but government authorities did not take over until 1803, just 20 days before the region became part of the United States in the Louisiana Purchase.

Queen of the Damned was the worst movie ever made.

NO IT ISN'T. :rwmad:

It was utter shite, sorry.

I'm not saying it's an Academy Award-winner, but it's not the worst movie ever.

That would be Spice World.

or maybe,

They Saved Hitler's Brain.

or something with Tom Cruise in it (exccept Interview With A Vampire).

hmmm maybe time for a Most Hated Movie Thread again.

1768 - James Cook begins his first voyage.

Tom Cruise is in lots of great movies.

Top Gun was good.

I dont like Tom Cruise. Name a great movie he's been in Wacky besides Interview.
I have never seen all of Top Gun...just not my kind of film, and when it was on TV it seemed really dated so I changed the channel.

The one and only good movie Tom Cruise has been in is Eyes Wide Shut.

^ I've tried to watch that on TV - but keep coming on in the middle of the film so never knew what was going on (because I do like Nicole Kidman) but it just went on and on -kept falling asleep! So I haven't give it a fair go to be honest.

What about that movie where he goes around jumping on couches and peeing on chimps?

I liked Minority Report.

The Last Samurai. And I say that while loathing Tom Cruise with a vengeance.
Interview was only great because Brad Pitt was in it.

Oh yeah, Minority Report was good and I like the War of the Worlds remake even though 28 people will now reply saying "LOL THAT SUCKED REMAKES ARE GAY I HATE DOGS."

LOL THAT SUCKED REMAKES ARE GAY I HATE DOGS.

That one with Colm Meaney as an evil irish landlord did suck though.

Colm Meany was in a film that sucked?!
Thought I'd seen all his films, but that one doesn't sound familiar.

What was it called, d'you remember?
