Today in History: Battle of Adrianople

Dual

RIP Karl 1991-2014
9 August, 378: The Eastern Roman Army under Valens attacks rebel Goths north of Adrianople (modern Turkish Edirne). Western Roman reinforcements failed to arrive in time, and so Valens commanded the troops in person, the last Roman Emperor for centuries to do so. The majority of the Roman Army was annihilated, and the Goths even killed Emperor Valens. This was the worst Roman defeat since Teutoburg over 350 years before. The crisis initiated by the battle resulted in Theodosius being called in from Spain to lead the east, and ended the Roman legionary infantry, giving rise to the Byzantine Kataphractois and mercenary systems.
