Ok, I love "American Werewolf in London". I'm completely un-interested/neutral on a "Top Gun" sequel, beyond my overall distaste for useless sequels. At least in this case the source material isn't classic.
Supposedly Tom Cruise is insisting that "Maveric" is in this next movie.

Now THAT I would go and see.
My own experience with the original was that I saw it WAY too many times on my way over to the gulf (they played it EVERY NIGHT...along with "Victory at Sea").

As for how Maverick fits in with the young, hot-shot, party-boy drone pilots Tony Scott's been talking about recently? That's still unclear. Although, perhaps my irrational and unsubstantiated hopes of seeing Maverick living in a one bedroom apartment with Val Kilmer's Iceman...boozing, drugging, and angry sexing to rid himself of the decaying specter of Goose...who sits at the foot of their bed every night in his flightsuit and cracked helmet admonishing "Why did you kill me, Mav?"...are not altogether lost. Actually, they probably are. And if they're not, they certainly should be.
