Transformers -- it all began today

It was the best of all those eighties cartoons, always my favourite. Then I started reading the comics and was BLOWN AWAY by the (relatively) more sophisticated storytelling. I still buy Transformers comics to this day and they have gay and transgender robots now. So there. Also, fuck Michael Bay.

Transformers G1 was the best Transformers. EVAR. Fuck Beast Wars. Transformers Prime was good also.

Second best eighties cartoon: GI Joe.

I never had many Transformers. I always liked them, but i guess they were more expensive than regular action figures so my parents didn't buy many of them. My brother had the evil semi (which was way smaller than Optimus) and one of the arms that went with the semi to make the bigger robot. He had Blaster, Soundwave, and the little jet that met Cobra Commander. And, somehow he ended up with Cup, the grandpa Transformer. I remember when they rereleased them as Generation 2, and he had a job by then so he snatched up Optimus, and the constructicons. I think the only transformer i had was a little car that sparked when you rolled it on the floor.

But, i had a shit ton of G.I. Joes, Masters of the Universe, (and castles) and almost the entire set of the Super Powers collection. (Except for the rare Cyborg figure of course.) And, I had the Batmobile. So I never lamented my lack of Transformers. I did have Opitmus Primal, and the T-rex Megatron.

I remember before I got Optimus Prime I used to look at him in the window of the local toy shop and you probably don't get local toy shops anymore because of Amazon.

I look at toys on amazon all the time.

I used to be a toy nerd until I got broke, and sold it all (except some childhood stuff). I still look in the toy aisle every time I'm at Walmart. If those WWE toys weren't so damn expensive I'd probably have a bunch of those mint on card.

Or, I'd play with them, whatever.

Yeah I think I only ever bought Optimus Prime and Bumblebee. Sadly I think I had more Gobots and GIJoes. I never sold my toys they either got buried in the backyard or rotted away in the attic like my poor Light up eyes Lion-O.:(

I too bought toys in my late teens/early 20's when I had a job. My most valuable ones are The Eradicator. My Galoob Star Trek the Next Generation action figures (Beardless Riker! Oh my!) and my assorted Babylon 5 action figures. They are on display with my other action figures on my bookcase.

I saw a bunch of Babylon 5 figures mint on card at a flea market. I was gonna snatch them up for my Ebay, but they weren't worth the risk. They still had the store price sticker on them. After 20+ plus years those damn things are near impossible to remove without diminishing the value.

The only thundercat i owned was the light up eyes Lion-O.

Did you have the Eradicator that was offered in wizard/toyfare? I might still have mine somewhere.

I don't know. I bought him in a comic book shop in Rochester back in 2006 when I lived there for about six months.

The cartoon and anything G1 are top drawer IMO - watching the movie at the cinema for a friend's birthday is one of my fondest childhood memory - that was 31 fucking years ago. The movies - hmmm, I don't mind some bits in the first couple. Most of it is absolute turgid tripe though.

As for G1 Transformers I have left (all in top condition)
- Optimus Prime
- Soundwave (Plus Laserbeak)
- Hot Rod
- Skids
- Prowl
- Wheeljack
- Starscream

I have long mulled over buying boxed Dinobots. The only thing stopping me? Where would I put the bloody things. The above are all in storage waiting for me to sell them...

The first Michael Bay movie is a big guilty pleasure of mine. Of course it’s dumb, but it is still very well paced and entertaining. It’s got a similar thing going on as Independence Day. And also like Independence Day, the first is the only one worth watching.
