I get told off by my girlfriend for watching trash movies so I'm usually lumbered with watching something with "artistic value" which is fine since I love quality cinema. But I also like watching trash comedies with absolutely zero intellectual value and and so when I get a chance to do so (girlfriend not here) I do just that.
So, I watched three trash comedies today (got absolutely nothing better to do, no) and here are my thoughts on the three I watched:
Step Brothers

This is what trash comedy movies are all about and Will Ferrell has made some brilliant trash comedies and some pretty crappy ones as well so I had no idea whether this one would be any good. Luckily it was a lot of fun.
There is plenty of puerile humor to be found as you might have guessed but for the most part it all hits the mark and even has some decent laugh out loud moments.
What can I say, John C. Reilly and Will Ferrell play dumb idiots really well and Adam Scott as Will Ferrell's intensely unlikable younger brother is excellent too. Rob Riggle has a small part to play in the movie which I wished had been expanded on but since he's leaving the Daily Show I expect him to turn up in his own starring vehicle sooner rather than later since he's obviously worthy of it. I'd probably even watch Step Brothers again so I guess this one is a return to form for Ferrell after all. Not in the same league as Old School but definitely worth a watch if you're in for a mindless and idiotic but ultimately funny movie.

Get Smart

I've loved Steve Carrell ever since his days on the Daily Show and so am always willing to watch his movies. He has to be one of the most likable leading everyman movie stars in Hollywood.
Get Smart is an entertaining spy spoof movie which has an excellent cast. The aforementioned Carrell is great as usual and joining him are The Rock, The Great Khali, Terrence Stamp, the delectable Anne Hathaway and even Masi Oka is along for the ride. The Rock is great as the super cool spy with some great self deprecating comedy moments and oodles of charisma that have elevated him beyond being just a former wrestler who makes movies.
The Great Khali fills his purpose by not saying much at all and it's entertaining watching Carrell end up having lengthy fight scenes with both The Rock and Khali.
Anne Hathaway is drop dead gorgeous in this movie and even sports a bob at one point.
Now, I don't really have any fetishes but the bob hairstyle could probably be classed as my one unique fetish. On the right girl this is the epitome in my opinion so I was glad to see it here!
YES PLEASE.
Get Smart has some decent gags and some more than decent action scenes but the whole spy parody thing isn't that new and it doesn't bring a whole lot to the table other than its great cast to make this a particularly unique outing. It's definitely not aimed at kids with some risque jokes but isn't crude either. But the wholly and purposefully unbelievable sets, props and style of the movie seems a bit cartoonish. Well a lot actually. The plot isn't that great either but serves its purpose well enough I suppose. As I said before it's the cast and especially the infinitely watchable Carrell that takes this movie just above average and worthy of a rental.

Ghost Town

Is this the first Ricky Gervais starring vehicle in a movie? Anyway... this actually ended up being quite touching in the end and is actually a lightweight romcom and not a trash comedy.
Greg Kinnear's character (Frank) is killed in an accident and after Ricky Gervais' character (Bertram) dies for seven minutes during a routine colonoscopy it has the side effect of him being able to see ghosts. All of which want him to contact their loved ones and basically finish their unfinished business since he is the only link to the living world who can see them. Frank is the most persistent and the movie follows Frank trying to convince Bertram to break up the relationship between his ex-wife Gwen, played by Tea Leoni who looks amazing for 42 I might add, and her new lover.
The plot is quite interesting but in a rather standard manner. The humor is decent enough but it's again the performances that make the movie so watchable with Gervais, Kinnear and Leoni all doing a great job. Without them I'm not sure how good the movie would be. It gets a bit corny in places but it works.
It's obvious that there has been room left for Gervais to improvise his character in a similar way --but also completely different given their contrasting styles-- that Russell Brand did in Forgetting Sarah Marshall. Which is a smart move I might add.
Gervais has done enough here to green light him for more starring roles in American movies and I think that's probably going to be a good thing.
