As for Sookie's mind reading, it's more of what peope project and how hard they project their thoughts. Some people are more "open" than others, and I imagine the reason she never read the killer's mind was because he was aware of the rumors about her so he was able to shield himself from them. Also, he's not always a pyscho. He has normal feelings and emotions, so when Sookie has been around him, he hasn't intended any harm to her.

The vision she had of him strangling his sister only happened when he was intending to kill her.

At least, that's my opinion.

i don't think he's psycho 24/7 - it may come upon him for whatever reason and remember she said she just picked up swirling emotions when he was chasing her in the bar, nothing concrete like MY NAME IS RENE AND I WANT TO KILL KILLL KILL EVERY WOMAN WHO SLEEPS WITH VAMPS- er, you get the idea. And she cant rifle thru minds like a book, as Tisi pointed out. If I was the biggest serial killer in the world and I was sitting in a bar wondering about nothing but 'where the hell is my drink ' - that's all she'd hear.
