True Story

We're in the dollar store today, waiting in line, and there's this grandmother-aged woman being rung out with little girl who was, maybe five years of age. It's important to note that, as grandma was perusing the aisles, her little princess was tearing around the store, barely supervised.

During the transaction, the little brat reaches up onto the counter and grabs a tube of lipstick off of an impulse display, and starts to smear it all over her face. The woman behind the counter (the owner, I believe) politely told the woman that she would have to pay for the lipstick.

Grandma went Hiroshima. "I can't believe you're going to make me pay for this. It's only a dollar, and accidents happen. This is terrible customer service!!"

I have to give the woman behind the counter credit, she stuck to her guns and made the old bag pay for the misbehavior of her granddaughter.

If there hadn't been a long line of folks waiting behind us, I'd have been tempted to tell granny what I was thinking: "You know, if you spent a few extra seconds and actually paid attention to what your little breeding mishap was doing, you wouldn't have had to pony up that extra buck."

What the hell is wrong with parents/grandparents these days?

The merchandise at the dollar store is hypnotic in it's beauty?

No, I agree. If you don't want to dish out a whole godamn dollar how about watching the children entrusted to you for fucks sake.

I had to keep my youngest daughter on a leash until she was nearly 4. She would literally dart away in a moment and ran into some light traffic once.

She's 12 now, and still too goddamn hyper to suit me.

BONC. Fuck BONC.

It's true though. I'm a dorky parent, but have never struck them physically in any fashion ever, and it's probably legend the way I was actually treated. They are the nicest kids you've ever met.

These kids (kids, sheesh the girls are 25 and 23) are gems.

I'd have gone off on her.

Seems everytime I'm in the store these days somebody's little rugrats are running around like crazies in the store. Not too long ago two little boys came around the edge of an aisle and slammed into me. I'm not real big - the impact knocked me into the aisle and then down on the floor. The father was in the same aisle and saw what happened - he didn't say a word to his kids, didn't apologise to me, help pick up the mess or anything. Dad got pissy when I told his kids to settle down and behave. I told him to shut up. If he wouldn't take charge of his kids he left people no choice but to do it for him. Wonder what that dad is going to do when his kids wind up in jail because he didn't teach them to act like humans.

No responsibility? No discipline? Children having been imbued with an utterly preposterous illusion of "junior adulthood" by a society more concerned with coddling than strengthening those in vulnerable circumstances? Take your pick.
