UN Continues to be worthless...

Not really news, that, but the specifics of it is that they're calling for a cease-fire in Gaza.

 Shit, why think so small? Why not call for World Peace? If you're not prepared to do anything to back your words up, they're pointless anyways.

Oh, and here's the story:
U.N. Security Council Passes Resolution Calling for Immediate Cease-Fire in Gaza
Thursday, January 08, 2009
AP

UNITED NATIONS — Three days of intense negotiations over the wording of a Gaza cease-fire resolution culminated Thursday night in the U.N. Security Council passing the measure, calling for an immediate, durable truce between Israel and Hamas. ...
Oh, and the story goes on to say Condoleeeezzzza Rice said some smart things at the hearing that will certainly be ignored. But it gave me an excuse to say "Condoleeeeeeeeezzzzzzzza".

I heard that on NPR on my way to work this morning and couldn't stop laughing. Maybe when black jesus takes office he will give them a good talking to and they will see the error of their ways.

Don't count the UN out. They've been very helpful in securing both the Golan and Southern Lebanon for Israel. Same could be said for Sinai, but the Soviets blocked it, so with UN support we set up the independent MOF.

Likely for this French/Egyptian plan to work, a UN force will have to take over the Gaza to enforce it.

So while this resolution itself is pretty worthless, it is a building block for something substantial in the future.

Hamas responded to the UN's call for a cease-fire by continuing rocket attacks on civilian targets. The Israelis, in return, are calling up their reservists.

In response, authorities expect both sides to receive a strongly worded letter, telling them how "very, very disappointed" the UN is in them.

The UN cannot stop people from fighting, it was never built to. Instead it's role to play is to provide Peacekeepers once a solution has been found (as what Egypt and France are doing).

There has been talk of the UN getting into the Peacemaking role, but that would require giving them more power, which the US always opposes.

And then bitches about it being impotent!

It's the same problem we're having with the Somali pirates. The USN can't really do a whole lot except play defense, b/c there is no Legal/Court structure established that we can turn them over to.

Well except for the all the ones we refuse to recognize!
