Right, here goes. Turning Rant-O-Meter to OVER 9000. :flame:
Today's match was hell on earth to watch. It was even worse than the Chelsea loss. The team was a shambles and gifted United the match. Not to take away from United though because they were clinical and played a stormer. Rooney remains completley unplayable at times and Nani was immense (wtf?) and as a unit they did everything right and the score line reflects that. That said we did not make it a difficult task for them to achieve.
First and foremost we have the biggest clown of a keeper in the Premier League.
*facepalm*
I was so annoyed when we let Shay Given be snapped up by City because with him between the sticks we would be so much stronger. I can't remember how much City bought him for but it wasn't much and we really missed out there. Chelsea, Liverpool and United have top class keepers and they are always a difference maker. Almunia is a joke that should be playing in the Championship. He is a comedy of errors who instils no faith whatsoever. He loses us big matches all the time. If I see him run out like a headless chicken completley missing the ball in front of him or I see him kick the ball out of play (he does this 20 times a match) one more time I'm going to have a stroke.
Almunia simply is not good enough to be the Number 1 at Arsenal. Vermaelen and Gallas are always bailing him out. The score line would have been different if we had a competent keeper today.
But it's not all Almunia's fault. The whole team were shit with the exception of Song, Arshavin and Vermaelen who played out of their skins.
I've said it before and I'll say it again: Song is immense in the holding midfield role. He never gets skinned and his hold up play is sublime. I've never seen a player improve so drastically in such a short time. He was crap last season. But after getting a soft Yellow in the first half he was shackled to an extent.
Arshavin was all over the place winning balls and coasting in to space and made a mockery of Johnny Evans all night. His final product was off though. Pretty much every single one of our players had a reasonable crack at goal and drove wide. Frustration is an understatement.
Vermaelen was solid as usual and worked so hard all night. He was fired up and scored our only goal from open play and defended well every single time Almunia fucked up. He can't be blamed for the scoreline.
Those were the positives. The rest of the team were off the pace with the biggest culprits being Almunia, Clichy, Denilson and Nasri. All four were terrible with Denilson being the absolute crème da la crème of shite. I said that Arshavin skinned Evans a lot today and he did but the same thing was happening to Clichy by Nani who carved out opportunity after opportunity and even I had to applaud the goal as it was a fantastic piece of individual skill from the Portuguese nancy boy.
Fabregas did his best but he was surrounded by a shambles of a midfield and only the tiny figure of Arshavin to pick out up front. He didn't have his best game either today and when you add all that to the other problems in the team you can't help but lose to a side with United's quality and workrate.
Playing Denilson over an in form Diaby was a mistake. We needed grit and strength in midfield and we lacked it from the off. Almunia was to blame for the first goal and Denilson was to blame for the second which is appalling given how far a headstart Denilson had on Rooney and Vermaelen from within the box burst his guts out to stop an attack while Denilson from OUTSIDE the box jogs like nobody's business.
And now my rant will go in to very familiar territory.
We need a world class striker in the team. As it stands we only have one world class striker and he is on the injury table for the rest of the season. Arshavin should not play as a lone striker. He's too small to pick out. His quality is undeniable but he is a natural attacking midfielder. He needs to sit behind the main striker and make surging runs not be our only option up front. Eduardo is well and truly off the boil these days. He has not been the same since his injury and Bendtner is coming back off a long injury and the ring rust is apparent. Wenger needs to get a quality goalkeeper and a quality striker. Pfft, it's a waste of time banging on about it because it's all been said before.
It's all very well passing the ball around like a slag at a United Christmas party but without direct penetration and a quality striker to pick out you're not going to win these types of games.
Both United matches this year show different things in what is wrong at Arsenal. We outplayed United at Old Trafford yet we leave with no points because we can't close the game down. That's when we're playing well. And today when we didn't play well we were lacking the right personnel on the pitch to make a difference. Both scenarios result in the same 0 points.
I have to bite the lip of pride and just simply give massive props to Rooney though. What a fucking player he is. With Ronaldo gone he's shows massive world class quality to drag, at times, an under-performing United side to where they are now. Bad news for us today but hopefully a glimmer of hope for England at the World Cup.
I don't see us getting much joy at Chelsea though we should bury Liverpool at least. But I think this match was a turning point when you consider the draw with Villa. we're going to slot comfortably in to third while Chelsea and United continue to battle for the league.
