Russia-Ukraine war: 15k probes into Russian war crimes, 'Cost of justice is small potatoes' says ICC head

Ukrainian Prosecutor-General Iryna Venediktova told reporters Tuesday that there are currently 15,000 ongoing investigations into Russia's war crimes since the invasion began more than three months ago. "We have 15,000 cases only about Ukraine," she said while discussing a joint effort by the International Criminal Court (ICC) to hold Russia accountable for its reported atrocities. "Just think about it, only 15,000. Tomorrow [there will be an] extra 200-300. "Venediktova said Ukrainian officials had barely begun to investigate and prosecute those who have been accused in the Russian armed forces. The ICC launched its largest-ever investigation into war crimes earlier this month in coordination with the European Union’s legal branch, Eurojust, along with Poland, Lithuania and Ukraine. At least six European nations and the U.S. have also launched their own evidence-gathering probe.

Ukraine war: Putin vows to hit new targets if West sends weapons to Ukraine

The warning came as explosions shook parts of Kyiv on Sunday in the first assault on the capital city for weeks. Russia says it hit tanks supplied by European countries. Ukraine says it was a railway repair plant. The capital has seen little shelling in recent months after Russia refocused its efforts on the Donbas region. As Russia makes slow but steady progress on the ground there - hundreds of kilometres to the east - several countries have pledged to send advanced weapons to Kyiv. Most recently, the US announced it was sending the M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (Himars) - which is composed of precision-guided missiles that can hit targets as far as 70km (45 miles) away - far further than the artillery Ukraine currently possesses.

EU blames Russia for food crisis, Russian UN envoy walks out

European Council President Charles Michel is accusing Russia of using food supplies as “a stealth missile against developing countries” and blaming the Kremlin for the looming global food crisis. Michel addressed Russian Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia directly at the council meeting, saying he saw millions of tons of grain and wheat stuck in containers and ships at the Ukrainian port of Odessa a few weeks ago. That was “because of Russian warships in the Black Sea," and Moscow’s attacks on transport infrastructure and grain storage facilities, and its tanks, bombs and mines that are preventing Ukraine from planting and harvesting, he said.

Ukraine's At Risk of Losing War With Russia: Military Official

Russia’s attack on Ukraine has become a war of artillery, and Ukraine is at risk of losing it, according to the deputy head of Ukrainian military intelligence. Above, a member of the Ukrainian troops stands on an armored vehicle moving towards the front line in the city of Lysychansk in the eastern Ukraine region of Donbas on June 9, 2022.

Russia's attack on Ukraine has become a war of artillery, and Ukraine is at risk of losing, according to the deputy head of Ukrainian military intelligence. Vadym Skibitsky told The Guardian in an interview published Friday that Ukraine is now heavily reliant on weapons provided by the West in its counteroffensive against Russia. Russia, meanwhile, currently outranks Ukraine in terms of artillery supplies, according to the official. While there are indications that neither Russia or Ukraine is currently poised to score a decisive victory in the conflict, Skibitsky's comments indicate that weapons, or a lack thereof, may serve as a tipping point in the ongoing "artillery war." Maps with assessments of territorial control in Ukraine, which are shared daily by the Institute for the Study of War, show that Russia and Ukraine have only been gaining and losing land in small increments in recent weeks. Last month, U.S. President Joe Biden signed a $40 billion aid package for Ukraine. He also announced an additional security assistance package for the country worth $700 million on June 1. Skibitsky did not mention the U.S. aid in the interview, nor whether it is expected to make any significant impact in Ukraine's fight against Russia.

Russia destroys bridge near Ukraine's besieged Severodonetsk, cutting off a key escape route

Russian forces have blown up a bridge linking the embattled Ukrainian city of Severodonetsk to another city across the river, cutting off a possible evacuation route for civilians, local officials said on Sunday. Severodonetsk has become the epicentre of the battle for control over Ukraine's eastern region of Donbas. Parts of the city have been pulverized in some of the bloodiest fighting since the Kremlin unleashed its invasion on Feb. 24.Ukrainian and Russian forces were still engaged in street by-street fighting there on Sunday, said the governor of Luhansk province, Serhii Haidai. Russian forces have taken most of the city, but Ukrainian troops remain in control of an industrial area and chemical plant where hundreds of civilians are sheltering. But the Russians had destroyed a bridge over the Siverskyi Donets River linking Severodonetsk with its twin city of Lysychansk, Haidai said.

What next? Ukraine's allies divided over Russia endgame

Is it better to engage with Russian President Vladimir Putin over his invasion of Ukraine or to isolate him? Should Kyiv make concessions to end the war, or would that embolden the Kremlin? Are ramped up sanctions on Russia worth the collateral damage? These are some of the questions testing the international alliance that swiftly rallied around Ukraine in the days after the Russian invasion but that, three months into the war, is straining, officials and diplomats told Reuters. As Western governments grapple with spiralling inflation and energy costs, countries including Italy and Hungary have called for a quick ceasefire. That could pave the way for scaled back sanctions and end the blockade of Ukrainian ports that has worsened a food security crisis for the world's poorest.

"Russia Doesn't Have The Capacity To Capture All Of Ukraine": US Official

Russian President Vladimir Putin likely still wants to capture much if not all of Ukraine but has had to narrow his tactical objectives in war, Under Secretary of Defense for Policy Colin Kahl said on Tuesday.

"I still think he has designs on a significant portion of Ukraine, if not the whole country. That said, I do not think he can achieve those objectives," Kahl said, speaking at an event hosted by the Center for New American Security.

"They may make tactical gains here and there. The Ukrainians are holding up. I do not think the Russians have the capacity to achieve those grandiose objectives."

Zelensky Denies He's Planning to Bring War to Russia

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has denied accusations that he would use long-range missile systems that the West might supply to fire on Russia. In a remote interview with Danish media Tuesday, Zelensky said that Ukraine is "not interested in shelling civilians" and that they are not "terrorists."
"We need the right weapons...that work at such a distance," he said in the interview, according to USA Today. Zelensky and other Ukrainian authorities have ramped up calls for more weapons supplies in recent days to aid their counteroffensive against Russia in what one official has described as a war of artillery. After news reports last month indicated that the U.S. was poised to send long-range rocket systems to Ukraine, Anatoly Antonov, the Russian ambassador to the U.S., alleged that Ukraine may use the equipment to bring the war to Russia.

Russia-Ukraine latest news: Americans warned to avoid Ukraine after two fighters captured

White House national security spokesman John Kirby reiterated concerns about Americans going to Ukraine to help in the war. The warning came after The Telegraph's exclusive report that two former US servicemen had been captured during fighting with Russian forces in Ukraine. Relatives of Alabama veterans Andy Tai Ngoc Huynh, 27, and Alexander Drueke, 39, had been in contact with both US Senate and House offices seeking information about the men's whereabouts, press aides said. The White House administration was not able to confirm reports about the missing Americans, but Mr Kirby said: "We'll do the best we can to monitor this and see what we can learn about it."

Europe Offers Ukraine a Hope of Joining the E.U., but Not a Vast Arsenal

European leaders on Thursday pledged support for putting Ukraine on a path to membership in the European Union but did not promise the country additional heavy weapons on the scale it says it needs to repel a bloody Russian advance in the east. The leaders of France, Germany, Italy and Romania, meeting with President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine in Kyiv, all agreed to support Mr. Zelensky’s push to take the first step toward membership in the bloc, a move to redefine Ukraine as an integral part of Europe rather than a buffer state on its eastern rim.
Chancellor Olaf Scholz of Germany said that he and his fellow leaders had come “with a clear message: Ukraine belongs to the European family.”

Russia Adds More Pressure on European Gas Supplies

Russia stepped up pressure on Europe’s biggest economies with further cuts to the supply of gas, raising concerns of a fuel shortage this winter. Gas flowed through Nord Stream, the main conduit for Russian fuel into Europe, at an anemic pace for a fourth-straight day, reaching on Friday only 55% of its rate from the start of the week. Germany’s Uniper SE, the continent’s biggest importer of Russian gas, said it was receiving 40% of the gas it had requested from Russia’s state-owned exporter, Gazprom PJSC. France’s gas network manager, meanwhile, said no gas had flowed into the country through its border with Germany since Wednesday. And in Italy, the eurozone’s third-biggest economy, Eni SpA said Gazprom was sending 50% of the gas the energy major had requested. Russia is punching back against European sanctions and military support for Ukraine, targeting Europe’s ability to power its economy. The continent has long relied on Russian gas to generate electricity, fuel factories and heat homes a vulnerability the Kremlin is now exploiting.
