Russia-Ukraine war live: Russia renews ‘powerful assault’ on Soledar in Donetsk, says Ukrainian minister

Updated at 18:28
Bakhmut and Soledar under intense attack after Russian forces regroup and change tactics, Ukraine deputy defence minister says.

18:28
Poland’s president, Andrzej Duda, is meeting with the prime minister, Mateusz Morawiecki, and some of his ministers to discuss security issues amid the war in Ukraine, according to a presential aide. On the agenda is Ukraine’s request for delivery of western-made heavy battle banks including the German-made Leopard Two tanks, Pawel Szrot said. He said Warsaw would only decide to hand over a limited number of Leopard tanks if it would “only be within a wide agreement and an undertaking by other countries that have these tanks” .Such decisions also need to take Poland’s security into account, he added. Morawiecki on Saturday said he and Duda were involved in “wider coalition” international talks regarding heavy tanks for Ukraine, but that Warsaw would not proceed with potential deliveries alone.

Russians jumped the gun and declared they had taken Soledar days ago and each day they reannounce that they had taken it. So far they have supposedly taken the town four times (according to Russian propaganda). Ukraine shows time and gps stamped photos showing their troops still controlled all roads into the city. In short, never believe Russian claims because they always lie.

Ukraine Could Strike Devastating Blow to Putin as Military Struggles

Crimea has emerged as a central talking point in the war in Ukraine, and as President Volodymyr Zelensky's military forces continue their momentum on the battlefield, Russia faces a legitimate threat of losing the peninsula it took by force in 2014, according to military analysts. After Ukraine surprised many experts around the globe by mounting a strong defense against the Russian invasion that began in late February, Zelensky began publicly stating that he wants Crimea to be once again considered part of his country. Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin will not only refuse to relinquish Crimea, but he has said he wants four Ukrainian territories he illegitimately annexed in September to be recognized as part of Russia before he agrees to any potential peace talks.

This WAR has lasted way to fucking long, causing millions of Ukrainian and Russian to DIE. If the USA had kept their nose out of this situation, the Ukraine-Russia WAR would have been over 6-months ago. The United States of America is what's keeping the Ukraine-Russia WAR going.. No worries, we'll support them when this WAR is over. Remember how SLAVERY and the Holocaust turned out.

You are very wrong about this because Putin has repeatedly openly said is goal does not stop at Ukraine. He wants all of eastern Europe and declares Russia is not safe until he gets it. We have to make sure Putin's dreams of empire die in Ukraine because next it will be Maldova, the Baltic states, Finland, and Poland. If we want to avoid WW3 and a nuclear exchange then Putin's dreams of empire have to die in Ukraine.

LOl! Russian propagandists are already lying and claiming they have destroyed U.Sm Bradley fighting vehicles on Ukraine. The problem? They are still on the Netherlands and haven't been given to Ukraine yet. These fuckers don't even try to be believable.

This reminds me how just 24 Himars have been delivered yet Russia has claimed to destroy more than 120. Meanwhile, in reality they have yet to hit a single one.

Russia releases US Navy veteran held for nine months

Russia released on Thursday a US Navy veteran who had been held in the country's Kaliningrad territory for nine months, negotiator and former US politician Bill Richardson announced. Taylor Dudley had been held since April 2022 and was one of several detained Americans whom Richardson and US authorities have been seeking to have freed. According to CNN, Dudley, 35, had crossed into the Kaliningrad, an exclave between Poland and Lithuania, from Poland where he had been attending a music festival. The release came one month after Washington swapped jailed Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout for US basketball star Brittney Griner, whom the US said had been wrongfully detained and imprisoned for possessing vape cartridges with cannabis oil.

Russian President Vladimir Putin chairs a meeting of big businesses at the Kremlin in Moscow on Feb. 24, 2022.

As Vladimir Putin pushes his war in Ukraine into its second year, the deepening militarization of Russia’s economy is fueling fears among the country’s business elite that the squeeze on their companies is only just beginning. The government is already considering “one-time” taxes on some big firms to help boost revenues reduced by the tightening grip of sanctions and other restrictions and tycoons said they expect the Kremlin to step up demands for cash. Wartime laws also give the authorities sweeping powers to dictate company operations, from what is produced to how much it costs. With public calls for tycoons who aren’t enthusiastic enough in their support of the invasion be stripped of their assets, some of Russia’s richest now worry they could see their holdings seized by rivals seen as more loyal or even nationalized, according to people familiar with their thinking. The Kremlin’s public reassurances that business interests will be respected ring hollow with the Russian president’s attention focused on the war, not business, these people said, speaking on condition of anonymity for fear of retribution.

Expanded US training for Ukraine forces begins in Germany

The U.S. military's new, expanded combat training of Ukrainian forces began in Germany on Sunday, with a goal of getting a battalion of about 500 troops back on the battlefield to fight the Russians in the next five to eight weeks, said Gen. Mark Milley, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Milley, who plans to visit the Grafenwoehr training area on Monday to get a first-hand look at the program, said the troops being trained left Ukraine a few days ago. In Germany is a full set of weapons and equipment for them to use. Until now the Pentagon had declined to say exactly when the training would start. The so-called combined arms training is aimed at honing the skills of the Ukrainian forces so they will be better prepared to launch an offensive or counter any surge in Russian attacks. They will learn how to better move and coordinate their company- and battalion-size units in battle, using combined artillery, armor and ground forces.

Ukraine war live updates: Putin reportedly wants Donbas region seized by March; former Wagner commander flees Russia

Ukraine has said the battle for Soledar continues — again rebuffing Russia’s claims that it controls the town — but noted that Russian troops are trying to advance toward nearby Bakhmut, a long-standing target for Russia as it tries to gain control of Donetsk and the wider Donbas in east Ukraine. Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Monday evening that he had been briefed by military and intelligence chiefs on Russia’s plans in the east and south of the country.

Before the Russia-Ukraine WAR started, I would have never known Ukraine existed. I blame President Biden for this WAR. Bottom line is, more lives will be lost because Ukraine will not tap out.

NATO Warns of Russia's Long War in Ukraine, Vows to be Ready

Russia is preparing for an extended war so NATO must get ready “for the long haul” and support Ukraine for as long as it takes, the alliance's deputy secretary general told military chiefs from across Europe on Wednesday. Speaking at the opening of the military chiefs' meeting in Brussels, Mircea Geoana said NATO nations must invest more in defense, ramp up military industrial manufacturing and harness new technologies to prepare for future wars.

U.S. and Germany head for showdown over tanks for Ukraine

“The question of tanks for Ukraine must be closed as soon as possible,” said Andriy Yermak, head of the Ukrainian presidential administration.

Ukraine pleaded on Thursday for the West to finally send it heavy tanks as the defense chiefs of the United States and Germany headed for a showdown over weapons that Kyiv says could decide the fate of the war. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin was in Germany on Thursday to meet new Defence Minister Boris Pistorius, just hours after Pistorius was sworn into office. “The question of tanks for Ukraine must be closed as soon as possible,” he said. “We are paying for the slowness with the lives of our Ukrainian people. It shouldn’t be like that.” A big pledge of tanks requires resolving a stand-off between Washington and Berlin, which has so far blocked allies from sending its Leopard 2 tanks, workhorse of militaries across Europe.

Russia 'Sharply' Increases Fighting South of Donetsk as Wagner Touts Gains

Fighting in Ukraine's southern Zaporizhzhia region has recently ramped up, a local Russian-installed official said on Friday as the Wagner Group, a Russian paramilitary unit, touts progress in the Donetsk region. Vladimir Rogov wrote in a Telegram post that Russian forces had captured a village about 50 kilometers, or roughly 31 miles, from the Ukrainian-controlled city of Zaporizhzhia, The Moscow Times reported. Rogov added that Russian forces had used tanks, mortar and artillery to fire at a dozen regional villages in the city. "In the direction of Zaporizhzhia, the intensity of military activity has sharply increased," Rogov wrote. The reported ramped up fighting in Zaporizhzhia came as Russian and Wagner Group forces claim to be making gains in Eastern Donetsk, where Russia has been conducting a mouthslong and grinding fight to capture the Ukrainian-controlled city of Bakhmut. The Wagner Group's chief, Russian President Vladimi Putin's ally Yevgeny Prigozhin, announced Thursday on Telegram that his forces had taken full control of the village of Klishchiivka just south of Bakhmut.

A Look at Leopard 2 Tanks That Could Soon Be Sent to Ukraine

Michael Sohn

A Leopard 2 tank is pictured during a demonstration event held for the media.

In the wake of intense pressure from its allies, Germany appears to be inching toward approving deliveries of high-tech Leopard 2 main battle tanks that Ukraine and its biggest Western backers hope will boost Kyiv’s fight against Russian invaders. Following intense pressure from its allies, Germany appears to be inching toward approving deliveries of high-tech Leopard 2 main battle tanks that Ukraine and its biggest Western backers hope will boost Kyiv’s fight against Russian invaders. Over the weekend German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock said Berlin would not get in the way if Poland — arguably Ukraine's most vocal supporter among European Union neighbors — wants to ship Leopard 2 tanks from its arsenal across the border into Ukraine. And Germany is now not ruling out supplying such tanks to Ukraine itself, cautioning however that the implications of such a step need to be carefully weighed.

Russia-Ukraine war live: Germany could soon give Poland approval to send tanks; US reportedly leaning towards sending Abrams tanks

Media reports say German approval could come as soon as Wednesday while Biden administration is said to be considering sending tanks too.

Here’s an interesting read by our reporters Shaun Walker and Pjotr Sauer on Yevgeny Prigozhin, the man behind the mercenary Wagner group that is fighting for Russia in Ukraine.

At the height of Russia’s first, covert invasion of eastern Ukraine, in summer 2014, a group of senior Russian officials gathered at the defence ministry’s headquarters, an imposing Stalin-era building on the banks of the Moskva River. They were there to meet Yevgeny Prigozhin, a middle-aged man with a shaven head and a coarse tone whom many in the room knew only as the person responsible for army catering contracts. Now, Prigozhin had a different kind of demand. He wanted land from the defence ministry that he could use for the training of “volunteers” who would have no official links to the Russian army but could still be used to fight Russia’s wars. Many in the ministry did not like Prigozhin’s manner, but he made it clear that this was no ordinary request. “The orders come from Papa,” he told the defence officials, using a nickname for Vladimir Putin designed to emphasise his closeness to the president.

Russia met with officials at Uefa on Tuesday as it tried to make its return to international football in Europe. Russian Football Union vice-president Aleksandr Alaev declined to comment when leaving after three hours of face-to-face talks, Associated Press reports. They were the first discussions since Russia drew back from a threat last month to leave Uefa and seek to join the Asian Football Confederation. Russian teams are banned from UEFA and FIFA competitions during the war in Ukraine and there currently is no way back from those decisions that were upheld at sport’s highest court.
