Media reports say German approval could come as soon as Wednesday while Biden administration is said to be considering sending tanks too.

Here’s an interesting read by our reporters Shaun Walker and Pjotr Sauer on Yevgeny Prigozhin, the man behind the mercenary Wagner group that is fighting for Russia in Ukraine.

Russia met with officials at Uefa on Tuesday as it tried to make its return to international football in Europe. Russian Football Union vice-president Aleksandr Alaev declined to comment when leaving after three hours of face-to-face talks, Associated Press reports. They were the first discussions since Russia drew back from a threat last month to leave Uefa and seek to join the Asian Football Confederation. Russian teams are banned from UEFA and FIFA competitions during the war in Ukraine and there currently is no way back from those decisions that were upheld at sport’s highest court.

Video Shows Russian Tank Rip Apart Trees With Gunfire in Ukraine Firefight

Drone footage shared on Twitter earlier this week shows a Russian tank unleashing powerful attacks against Ukrainian forces. The war has surpassed its eleventh month of fighting, and firefights persist throughout Ukraine as Russia continues to encroach on the territory. Ukraine has continued to return fire, bolstered by ammunition, equipment and other materials supplied from its Western allies, including the United States. The footage shows a Russian BMPT, commonly referred to as a Terminator, operating alongside a Russian tank as it rolls through a forest at the frontlines of the Russia-Ukrainian war. The tank begins firing at the Ukrainian forces, and the ammunition is strong enough to rip apart the trees and cause them to crash down. There are massive clearings shown in the forest where the firefight destroyed mature trees. "Rare footage of a Russian BMPT operating alongside a Russian tank," a Twitter user tweeted with a nearly minute-long clip of the footage.

An off-the-books mercenary army is gaining power in Putin's Russia

There's a growing rift at the top of the Russian government between Vladimir Putin’s official military and the off-the-books mercenary force that has achieved some gains for Russia in Ukraine. The oligarch figurehead of the private military company Wagner Group, Yevgeny Prigozhin, has been openly critical of Russia’s military and its bureaucracy. Recruiting for tens of thousands of fighters in Russian jails, Wagner offers freedom and cash after a six-month tour. Videos of these prison yard pitches made by Prigozhin have been shared on social media, and prison-rights groups in Russia estimate 30,000 have taken up the offer, according to an excellent analysis of what we know about Wagner and Prigozhin by CNN’s Tim Lister. Deserters are said to be shot. The wounded are left behind on battlefields for hours, according to the assessment. Prisoners account for the bulk of Wagner’s casualties as they are pushed to storm Ukrainian positions. More experienced fighters with better equipment follow.

Americans are getting more skeptical of Biden's massive aid packages for Ukraine: poll

Americans are increasingly skeptical of President Biden's massive weapons packages for Ukraine, according to new polling. The number of Americans who say the U.S. is giving too much aid to Ukraine has risen to 25%, up from 19% in September, according to Pew Research. Meanwhile, 31% of Americans say the U.S. is giving the correct amount of aid, down significantly from the fall. Another 20% said they would like to see the U.S. give more aid, while 20% also said they were not sure. Pew Research conducted the poll from Jan. 18-24, surveying 5,152 U.S. adults, according to the Washington Post. Biden's administration has delivered tens of billions worth of military support to Ukraine since Russia invaded the country in February 2022. He announced last week that the Pentagon would deliver 31 M1 Abrams tanks to the country in the latest package. The U.S. has already supplied thousands of combat vehicles, including 1,700 Humvees, and pledged earlier this month to send another 500 armored vehicles of various types. Support for Ukraine aid has remained high among lawmakers of both parties, though House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., said last year that he does not support giving Ukraine a "blank check."

West must transfer to Ukraine all types of weapons, barring nukes, Czech president-elect says

Pavel stated that there should be no restrictions on military aid to Ukraine and called on allies to show more courage. “When it comes to conventional weapons, I really can see no reason for any limits,” Pavel said. The newly-elected Czech leader added that Ukraine cannot fight such a strong enemy without armored vehicles, drones, artillery, and long-range missiles, and maybe even supersonic aircraft. Pavel noted that the West needs more courage, because “some countries have a bit of a reserved stance” regarding the supply of modern weapons to Kyiv.

Ukraine warns against complacency in face of Russian threat

Volodymyr Zelenskyy has warned Ukrainian citizens against complacency in the face of an expected Russian offensive and called on western allies to speed up their assistance to Kyiv. The Ukrainian president said he saw signs that in some cities, people were letting their guard down despite ongoing hostilities, a “weakness” his country could not afford. Compared to the start of the war, when “the spirit was stronger”, Zelenskyy said, “now I see in some cities that they are at rest.” “Everyone needs to understand we are at war — it’s not over,” he said in a press conference after a summit with top EU officials on Friday. “The resilience of all of our guys depends on both weapons and motivation. Motivation is given not only by the partners, it can be inspired by the spirit from within the country.”

Matt Gaetz rips ‘bipartisan coalition’ that favors war in Ukraine: ‘How much more?’

Rep. Matt Gaetz on Monday accused President Biden and members of both parties of spending tens of billions of dollars in Ukraine to keep a war going that does not satisfy any U.S. national interest other than making U.S. weapons manufacturers happy. "How much more for Ukraine? Is there any limit?" Gaetz, R-Fla., asked on the House floor. "Which billionth dollar really kicks in the door? Which redline we set will we not later cross?" Gaetz said China's surveillance flights in U.S. airspace should remind America that China is one of the "real issues" the U.S. government should be dealing with. But he said Biden will likely use his State of the Union address on Tuesday to argue that Ukraine is America’s top priority.

Russia-Ukraine war at a glance: what we know on day 349 of the invasion

  • Ukraine has released extraordinary video footage that appears to show Russian fighters dragging their badly wounded commander away from the battlefield, and then beating him violently with what appear to be shovels. A Ukrainian drone captured the incident near the eastern city of Bakhmut, where intense fighting has been raging for months.
  • Russia almost certainly now lacks the munitions and manoeuvre units required for successful offensives, the UK Ministry of Defense says. Moscow will continue to demand sweeping advances, but it remains unlikely that Russia can build up the forces needed to substantially affect the outcome of the war in the coming weeks, according to the MoD’s latest intelligence update.
  • Ukraine’s parliament has approved the appointment of Ihor Klymenko as the country’s new interior affairs minister and Vasily Malyuk as the new head of the country’s security services, known as the SBU. Klymenko, formerly Ukraine’s national police chief, was serving as acting interior minister after the former minister, Denis Monastyrsky, was killed last month in a helicopter crash on the outskirts of Kyiv.

Ukraine war live updates: Russia launches new missile strikes; Moldova’s government collapses

Moldova’s Prime Minister Natalia Gavrilita said Friday that her government was resigning following a volatile 18 months in power and an ongoing war at its border. Gavrilita did not say whether the decision was in direct response to the war between neighboring Ukraine and Russia. The announcement came shortly after the country’s defense ministry said a Russian missile violated its airspace and summoned its Russian envoy amid a fresh Russian assault on Ukraine.
Explosions were heard across the Ukrainian capital Kyiv Friday, with missiles targeting several high-voltage facilities across the country and disrupting power supply. Moscow is launching another major offensive focused primarily on eastern Ukraine, with Russian military attempting to break through defenses close to the town of Kreminna, the governor for the Luhansk region said. The southeastern city of Zaporizhzhia was hit with at least 17 missiles in an hour, according to local officials, while Kharkiv also reported about 10 explosions and said power had been cut in some areas.

White House mocks Putin's mismanagement of the war in Ukraine, saying he changes generals like 'socks'

  • The White House mocked Putin's handling of the Ukraine war on Monday.
  • NSC spokesperson John Kirby said Putin changes generals like "I change socks."
  • Russia has already had several commanders in charge in Ukraine in less than a year of fighting.
The White House mocked Russian President Vladimir Putin's handling of the war in Ukraine on Monday, pointing to the frequent turnover among the generals placed in charge of the ongoing invasion. "Clearly Mr. Putin is not making good decisions," National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby told reporters. "It's borne out by the fact that he continues to change generals the way I change socks." The war in Ukraine has not yet lasted a full year, but there's already a growing list of generals who've been tapped to spearhead Russian operations before getting fired or demoted.

Two Dutch F-35 fighters were scrambled to intercept three Russian military aircraft near Poland, according to the Netherlands’ defence ministry.
In a statement late on Monday, translated by Reuters, the defence ministry said:

The then unknown aircraft approached the Polish Nato area of responsibility from Kaliningrad.
