Failures in Ukraine haven't left 'cracks' in Putin's hold on power, German spy chief says, warning Russia has what it needs to wage a long war

The war in Ukraine has often seen Russia's military humiliated on the battlefield, dealing a major blow to its prestige in the eyes of the world. The conflict has also left Moscow increasingly isolated on the international stage, cementing Russian President Vladimir Putin's status as a global pariah. But Putin still maintains a strong grip on power in Russia in spite of the Kremlin's handling of the war and its myriad consequences for Russian society, according to Bruno Kahl, the head of the German Intelligence Agency (BND). The Kremlin has gone to extraordinary lengths to stifle opposition to the war in Ukraine. Putin signed a law that effectively outlawed criticism of Russia's unprovoked invasion, and high-profile critics of the war have been thrown behind bars while independent media outlets have been forced to shut down or move their operations abroad.

Half of US public approves of Washington's arms deliveries to Ukraine in 2nd year of Russia's war

Like the blue and yellow flags that popped up around the U.S. when Russia invaded Ukraine 15 months ago, U.S. popular support for Washington's backing of Ukraine has faded a little but remains widespread, a survey by the University of Chicago's Harris School of Public Policy and NORC shows. It found that half of the people in the U.S. support the Pentagon's ongoing supply of weapons to Ukraine for its defense against Russian forces. That level is nearly unchanged in the past year, while about a quarter are opposed to sustaining the military lifeline that has now topped $37 billion. When it comes to specific kinds of U.S. backing for Ukraine, popular support for U.S. sanctions against Russia has experienced the most significant drop, falling from 71% a year ago to 58% this spring, although that's still a majority. The decline in support for the sanctions may reflect people’s concern that the efforts to isolate Russia economically have contributed to inflation, analysts said.

There is a problem in that the house will not approve any more handouts for Ukraine so Biden just started lying and changing accounting standards so that he could send more. Biden is not concerned that all of that was blatantly illegal.

Russia's mercenaries send back bodies of U.S. and Turkish citizens from Ukraine

Russia's most powerful mercenary on Thursday said he was sending back the bodies of a U.S. citizen who was killed in fighting in the Ukrainian city of Bakhmut and that of a Turkish citizen who was found dead in a blown up building. Mercenaries from Russia's Wagner Group were shown in a video clip nailing closed the two wooden coffins and then draping a U.S. "Stars and Stripes" flag over one coffin and the "red banner" flag of Turkey on the other. "We are returning the body of an American and the body of a citizen of Turkey along with prisoners," Wagner founder Yevgeny Prigozhin said, standing near the coffins. The U.S. citizen perished in fighting in a part of Bakhmut known as the "nest" while the Turk was found dead along with a Turkish woman in the remains of a building blown up Ukrainian forces, Prigozhin said.

Who are the anti-Putin groups behind the dramatic raid into Russia?

A dramatic, daymatic, incursion into Russian territory has fueled questions about the Kremlin’s defenses but also about whether Ukraine may be going to new lengths in its efforts to penetrate them. The Belgorod border raid has thrust two groups of largely unknown fighters with neo-Nazi ties into the heart of the conflict. Russia has blamed the attack on Kyiv, but Ukraine has denied any involvement. As the chaos and confusion subsides, the two militant groups have emerged from relative obscurity to claim responsibility, taunt the Kremlin and promise more to come. NBC News looks at who and what appears to be behind the raid.

Russia 'Has Already Lost' the War, Putin Critic Says From Jail

Russia has already lost the war in Ukraine, Moscow municipal councillor and Vladimir Putin critic Alexei Gorinov said in a letter to Newsweek from prison, where he is serving a nearly seven-year sentence for "spreading false information" about the Russian military and the full-scale invasion. Gorinov, a 61-year-old Russian opposition politician, a member of the municipal council of the Krasnoselsky district in Moscow, and a lawyer was sentenced on July 8, 2022, by a court in Russia's capital to seven years in a penal colony for criticizing what Putin calls a "special military operation" in Ukraine. His sentence was later cut by one month, and he was also banned from holding public office for four years after his release. The official called on fellow Russians who support the full-scale invasion launched by Putin to consider the devastation that it has caused and will cause the country's next generation.

Drone Strike in Moscow Brings Ukraine War Home to Russians

At least eight drones were intercepted, the Kremlin said, but the foray raised questions about Russian air defenses. A barrage of attack drones were downed over Moscow on Tuesday, the first time civilian areas of the Russian capital have been touched directly by the Ukrainian conflict and a signal that a distant war may soon begin to feel somewhat less so for ordinary Russians. The physical damage was minimal, limited to shattered apartment windows and some minor injuries in an upscale neighborhood, but the psychological impact may prove far bigger for a citizenry that to date has been able to go about daily life with little thought for the bloodshed taking place over the border. “If the goal was to stress the population, then the very fact that drones have appeared in the skies over Moscow has contributed to that,” wrote one pro-war Russian blogger, Mikhail Zvinchuk, who posts under the name Rybar.

British Officials 'Legitimate' Russia Targets After Storm Shadow Strikes

British officials are now a "legitimate military target" for Moscow, former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said on Wednesday, responding to remarks from the U.K.'s foreign secretary that Ukraine has the right to strike military targets inside Russian territory. The U.K. "de facto is leading an undeclared war against Russia" by providing Ukraine with military aid, Medvedev, who is deputy chairman of Russia's Security Council, tweeted, calling the nation Moscow's "eternal enemy." On May 11, the U.K. became the first country to supply Ukraine with long-range cruise missiles. The U.K. provided the Storm Shadow missiles, which, according to Fabian Hoffmann, a missile technology expert, have the potential to strike the Kerch Strait Bridge—Russia's sole link to annexed Crimea, which Ukraine hopes to recapture in a counteroffensive.

Biden accuser Tara Reade bolts US for Russia, saying she fears for her safety

Tara Reade, the former Senate aide who in 2020 accused the more docent candidate Joe Biden of sexually assaulting her nearly three decades earlier, has fled the U.S. for Russia and asked President Vladimir Putin for citizenship. Reade made her surprise announcement on Tuesday in a lengthy interview with the pro-Russian Sputnik media organization. She appeared on a broadcast alongside Maria Butina, a suspected Kremlin spy who spent 13 months in a U.S. federal prison before being deported back to Russia in 2019, and thanked Butina for her assistance. Biden has denied the allegations made by Reade, who claimed Tuesday that her continuing efforts to speak out publicly about the president made her feel unsafe about living in the United States.

WRT Tara Reade she has some interesting things to say about Biden campaign and admin smears and threats to get her to shut up about how Biden sexually assaulted her. Basically, they have weaponized the justice system to try to shut her up.

She claims she went to Russia as part of her European book tour and Biden admin threatened to have her arrested if she returns to U.S..

Blinken says no cease-fire until Ukraine gains upper hand in war

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said Friday the United States won't support peace talks in the war in Ukraine until Kyiv holds the upper hand, possibly after a Ukrainian counteroffensive that appears to be taking shape. Blinken said heeding calls from Russia and others, including China, for a ceasefire and negotiations to end the war now would result in a “Potemkin peace” that wouldn't secure Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity or enhance European security. In a speech in Finland, which recently joined NATO and shares a long border with Russia, Blinken repeated the U.S. view that “a cease-fire that simply freezes current lines in place" and allows Russian President Vladimir Putin "to consolidate control over the territory he has seized, and rest, rearm, and re-attack — that is not a just and lasting peace.” Allowing Moscow to keep the one-fifth of Ukrainian territory it's occupied would send the wrong message to Russia and to “other would-be aggressors around the world,” according to Blinken.

Russia says Ukraine launched a major attack in the east[

It was not immediately clear if this marked the beginning of the counteroffensive that Kyiv has been preparing for months to reclaim occupied land.

Russia said that Ukraine's military had launched a significant attack in a bid to break through its defenses on the war’s eastern front lines. Kyiv did not confirm or deny the claims, made by officials in Moscow and the country’s influential military bloggers, but did caution against Russian misinformation. The Russian defense ministry said in an overnight statement that Ukrainian ground forces had launched “a large-scale offensive” at five areas in the Donetsk region in eastern Ukraine late Sunday. Ukraine used two brigades of its “strategic reserves” in the attack, with six mechanized and two tank battalions involved, the ministry said. It added that Ukraine had lost more than 250 troops, as well as 16 tanks and other equipment.

Major dam collapse triggers evacuations as Russia's war in Ukraine rages on

  • A major dam and hydroelectric power plant in Russian-occupied southern Ukraine suffered a collapse early Tuesday, prompting mass evacuations and fears for large-scale devastation.
  • Kyiv and Moscow blamed each other for the breach. Ukrainian military intelligence claimed Russian forces destroyed the Nova Kakhovka dam "in panic." The Kremlin denied involvement and accused Ukraine of "deliberate sabotage."
  • Ukrainian troops witnessed Russia soldiers being swept up in flood waters and fleeing the east bank of the Dnipro River after the collapse, a Ukrainian officer told CNN.
  • It remains unclear what caused the breach as a CNN analysis of satellite imagery shows the dam was damaged just days before suffering the structural collapse.
Artillery salvos could be heard intermittently, but search and rescue operations carried on, with soldiers and first responders unfazed by the constant thuds. The large presence of soldiers and first responders contrasts with the very few Kherson residents out on the streets. Many fled when Russia first invaded and officials say most still haven’t returned to the city that is controlled by Ukraine. Those who remain in the city know to take shelter in the afternoon when Russian artillery fire often picks up.

Floodwaters Engulf Front Line in Ukraine War

Thousands of people escaped inundated homes in southern Ukraine on Wednesday, including many rescued from rooftops, a day after the destruction of the Kakhovka dam gave rise to another humanitarian disaster along the front lines of the 15-month war. Floodwaters engulfed streets and houses and sent residents fleeing with what meager belongings they could carry from dozens of communities on both sides of the Dnipro River, which divides the warring armies in much of southern Ukraine. As the debris-choked waters began to peak on Wednesday, reports indicated that some 4,000 people had been evacuated in Russian- and Ukrainian-controlled areas, according to officials on both sides, a fraction of the roughly 41,000 residents who Ukraine estimates were at risk from the flooding. The U.S. State Department estimated that about 20,000 people would have to be resettled.

Top General Tells Putin How Russia Repelled Major Ukrainian Attack - Defence Ministry

The general in charge of Russia's troops in Ukraine has briefed President Vladimir Putin on how his forces repelled a large-scale Ukrainian attack in the southern Zaporizhzhia region, one of his subordinates said on Thursday. Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu said earlier on Thursday that Russian forces had withstood fierce overnight attempts by Ukrainian troops to break through the frontline in Zaporizhzhia and had inflicted heavy losses on them. Valery Gerasimov, Chief of the General Staff, had briefed Putin on the overnight battle on Thursday morning, Russian Colonel General Alexander Romanchuk said in a video clip released by the Defence Ministry. Romanchuk said attacking Ukrainian forces had run into serious problems in a Russian minefield, that Russia had used bombers to repel them, and alleged that Russian forces had destroyed three German-made Leopard tanks.

Russia's war in Ukraine

What we're covering
  • The death toll has risen to five in Ukrainian-controlled flooded regions affected by the collapse of the Nova Kakhovka dam, according to Kyiv. It’s still unclear whether the dam collapsed because it was deliberately targeted or suffered structural failure.
  • Residents are dependent on donations for clean water, according to charities, while irrigation issues could plague the country's agriculture industry for years. Officials have warned that mines may have been dislodged and could threaten Ukraine's coastline.
  • A Kremlin-backed official in the Zaporizhzhia region told Russian state media that there is "fierce fighting" on Ukraine’s southern front, amid questions about whether a Ukrainian offensive is underway there.

US citizen detained in Russia on drug trafficking charges

A US citizen has been detained in Russia on drug trafficking charges, local reports said. According to Moscow’s courts of general jurisdiction, the man was detained on Saturday when “the Khamovniki District Court of Moscow took a preventive measure against an American citizen”. In a statement on Telegram, the court described the man as a “former paratrooper and musician” who is now “accused of engaging in the narcotics business through attracting young people”. “A preventative measure in the form of detention was taken,” the statement added, according to CNN. Russia’s TASS news agency quoted a US State Department spokesperson as saying that the US was aware of the reports that an American had been detained in Moscow.
