Veep

The Tomtrek

Love Wookiee
Armando Iannucci's new AMERICAN show. First episode was last night on HBO.

It's basically The Thick of It, but set with the US Vice President instead of a minor MP in the cabinet. It also doesn't have Malcolm Tucker.

BUT I thought the first episode was pretty good! You could watch it maybe!

VEEP VEEP

Armando Iannucci has broken through to the American market? First I've heard of it. Guy's a genius.

I watched it. It was pretty good, but they said fuck a lot, as if just saying the word fuck is supposed to be funny.

Funniest bit was when the veep said she needed a shit.

That's pretty much how these people speak. It's exactly the same in The Thick of It (which is basically the same premise except set in the UK political scene), where it's basically angry people being very angry AND FUNNY and to do that they swear a lot.

I hated Veep. It was Julia Louis-Dreyfus playing Larry David if he were an asshole VP who nobody likes or respects. NOW LET'S SEE HOW MANY WAYS WE CAN MAKE PEOPLE HUMILIATE LARRY, OOPS I MEAN TOTALLY BELIEVABLE VICE PRESIDENT JULIA.

I don't mind lots of profanity if it is service to wit. There were lots of verbal harpoons lobbed back and forth by the hateful, venomous characters, but they weren't so much witty as they were white-collar "yo momma" contests.

I hate Curb Your Enthusiasm, and I didn't like Seinfeld that much either. So yeah I hate this show. OH WELL LOL.

I like both Seinfeld and Curb Your Enthusiasm. Forgot to DVR this last night. I'll have to watch it sometime, before I decide if I hate it.

I think it's pretty unfair to suggesting that they're copying Curb in any way when Veep is really pretty much an american version of The Thick Of It (which wasn't anything to do with Curb either.)

And I think Curb is brilliant and Seinfeld was the best american studio audience sitcom ever.

For some reason I never really got into The Thick of It, even though I really liked Time Trumpet and (I think he was involved in) Broken News, as well as some of his other things. I'll watch this if it's on TV.

They do (HBO GO), but only for people who already subscribe to HBO.

I can watch HBO on my iPhone!

Oh, and I never suggested that Veep was COPYING Curb or Seinfled. I merely said that it was in the same style as those 2 Larry David shows, which means it has a basic contempt for humanity and thinks the only way to get laughs is to make the main character a shit and then humiliate him/her all the time.

Well I guess I have a "contempt for humanity" then because Curb and Seinfeld were both great. I don't know how much of either of them you've watched if you think that's all there is to them.

Anyway, I watched Veep and it was okay. I didn't think the swearing was really all that bad at all. It was a bit chaotic and maybe hard to follow at times, but the first episodes of comedies are usually like that.

"What if Tom hanks dies?"

I think I was just disappointed because the commercials made it seem like it would be HILARIOUS.

I'M NOT SAYING PEOPLE WHO LIKE THOSE SHOWS ALSO HAVE A CONTEMPT FOR HUMANITY I'M SAYING LARRY DAVID DOES AND WELL YEAH JERRY SEINFELD DOES TOO AND NOW IT TURNS OUT THAT JULIA DOES AS WELL LOL BUT IT'S ME WHO'S THE ODD MAN OUT BECAUSE MOST PEOPLE LIKE THESE SHOWS AND I DON'T SO I'M THE FAGGOT PUSSY NAMBY-PAMBY WHO DOESN'T KNOW WHAT'S FUNNY LOL WHY IS LIFE SO LONG

I'm not saying there's anything wrong with not liking Curb or Seinfeld or Veep or anything, I just didn't think it was a very fair description.

And Larry David actually seems like a nice guy in all the interviews I've seen. The series where Ricky Gervais was interviewing people who influenced him, for example. David was very tolerant of Ricky's annoyingness and gave a nice interview. Whereas Gary Shandling didn't even attempt to hide his disdain for Gervais and was pretty nasty (but Ricky just kept doing that fucking laugh anyway.)
