I want to smell dark matter
Various movies I've watched recenty that don't fit into another thread.
The Jungle Book - "Live action" remake of the Disney classic. I say "live action" because really there was only one live action action character (Mowgli) and the rest were CGI animals. Even the jungles was CGI. Fortunately it was some of the most impressive CGI I've ever seen! The animals looked great. They looked so good that it felt a bit weird at first to see them talking with human voices. But I got used to it! Very good voice acting from Bill Murray and Ben Kingsley and I thought the young boy playing Mowgli did a pretty good job considering he was acting with blue tennis balls most of the time. It doesn't quite follow the cartoon as it only has two of the songs (but they're integrated well) and it's maybe slightly more dark than it. But it was a very well made and impressive film. FUN FOR ALL THE FAMILY. (Only complaint really is that ScarJo is wasted as a sexy snake who's only it for about two minutes.)
The Nice Guys - Action/comedy/detective/thriller type thing set in the seventies, written and directed by Shane Black of these type of movie and Iron Man 3 fame. At first I wasn't sure if I was going to like it because most of the humour seemed to come from people swearing and hitting each other and I don't always find those things automatically funny. But while there is a lot of swearing and hitting each other, it did end up being very funny in places and actually developed a good plot with characters I reasonably liked. I've never been a big fan of Russell Crowe (I find him a bit boring?) but he was fine here as the straight man. Ryan Gosling played the funny one and was excellent! The girl playing Gosling's daughter was also great, getting some of the funniest moments and showing really great comedic talents for someone so young. A good movie I would recommend!
The Girl With All The Gifts - Zombie film with a twist as the main character is an intelligent zombie child. And the zombies are made by a fungus so maybe zombie purists won't like it. But I liked it! A strong cast (Gemma Arterton, Glenn Close and Paddy Considine) and it looks good for a British film. Story takes some unexpected twists along the way, including an ending that almost feels comical so might not be to everyone's taste (but I liked it.) Recommended unless you hate zombies or zombies that can run fast.
