Wacky should read Sandman.

I tried the first time, honest, but it was taking too long to load (dial-up) and I could have been slowly loading pics of female celebrities instead so sorry.

Yeah, the Dial-up situation I can understand. It does take a long time to load the pages. I am on dial-up or ISDN even which is basically the same and it does take ages to load.

All I can say is that it's worthit. Save the pages to your computer and read a few issues at least. Perhaps to issue #8 with the introduction of Death since that is the first real genius story. Or not, I dunno.

Gaiman's Death was/is an inspired character.

Issues 1-7 are all exposition and set-up, but necessary.

Ok, who is your favourite employee of the Dreaming? Mine is Matthew but I have a soft spot for Merv as well.

And can you enlighten me as to where Matthew came from? He was called Matthew Cable when he was huiman right? I think he was a character in Swamp Thing but I don't know much about this sort of stuff.

Menty, this is where you learn of my ignorance: I haven't read the series. I had owned the 1st TPB for many, many years, but didn't start collecting the individual issues until halfway through "Brief Lives." I didnt' want to ruin it for myself by starting that late in the tapestry, so my intention was ALWAYS to go back and read it from start to finish and just collect the individual issues from that point on. (Eventually, I just stopped buying the individual issues, somewhere during "The Wake" and planned to just pick up the TPBs, which is what I'm doing, although, NOW it appears I'll wait to purchase the Absolute editions.) That's one of the reasons I'm so enthused about doing this with you and TK, so that I CAN finally read it.

That having been said, I am aware of certain characers just from having read about the series and have been interested in the characters and tales for a long time. Sandman has even inspired my own writing, significanly, and that's saying a lot considering I haven't really read the series, yet.

What I hope to bring to your discussion, other than enthusiasm, is a historical viewpoint regarding certain themes, characters, comic history, etc. that Gaiman might reference, but I'll be learning as I go, too.

I did find this for you, though:
"Matthew: Matthew the Raven started out as Matthew Cable. As a man, Matthew made his first appearance in Swamp Thing #1 (October-November #1972). In Swamp Thing #84, he makes his tranformation into a raven in the Dreaming. Matthew also has made some return visits to Swamp Thing. In Swamp Thing #118, he visits with Tefe'. In Swamp Thing #140 he visits Abby and manages to cast his old shadow.

Oh, and without having "met" or encountered the bulk of the Dreaming cast, I'd have to go with Merv as being my fave.

Shit, so I really MUST get to work posting these buggers up again. I am in Sandman fanboy mode at the moment. I recently redicovered the series for myself. Even though I read and own every issue from my school days I have only just recently been re-reading the series through again. I have got through the whole thing in four days. I am reading the completion of the Robert Gadling story which I won't spoil for you at the tail end of The Wake.

Now with my more intellectual and mature perspective on life in tact I can still say:

OMG BEST FRECLKING SERIES TEH EVER MADE AMAZING 1010101% BRILLIANT! LORD SHAPER TEH BESTEST!

But really, it's just awesome. If you haven't read the whole thing then there is a LOT that will become apparant and it all works so well as one coherent story. So so so many characters that just rule supreme. Everything from The Corinithian and Matthew doing the Buddy Cop thing for Morpheus and Thessaly and the Kindly Ones being all dark and dangerous.

Gotta love it.

I really hope Gaiman revisits Delerium and tells her story at some point. There is so much to still be told.

I know I keep saying it but TODAY I will at some point get a big update of five or more issues up in the Media Center.

Cool. And I'll continue my discussion/dissection of the 1st 8 issues. After that, for me, I'm in virgin territory.

Mentysent me Sandman via MSN as soon as I got broadband and it opened the door for me to not only read Neil Gaiman stuff but also the entire medium of comics. I would estimate I have read THREE MILLION comics since then (just an estimate.) Without Menty I wouldn't even know who Suqirrel Girl is today. It's a debt that can never be repayed. And he'll never know what it means to me.

Menty should post in the two different Sandman threads I've posted here in the last six months.

But he won't.

The graphic novels compile the first 70 plus issues from start to finish and are cheap and fun to read

this hardcover comprises the first 37 issues and is wonderful
