Wait, Caprica is actually being made?

"Well, if there's anything I can do to lower your expectations, that would probably be for the best." That's Eric Stoltz deftly managing fan excitement over the coming Battlestar Galactica spinoff, Caprica.

But expectations for Caprica—an atmospheric epic about cyborgs and broken hearts—can hardly be diminished when the cast includes such lights as Stoltz, Esai Morales, Paula Malcolmson and Polly Walker. For that matter, fans are atwitter at the news that Caprica will be executive produced by noted Buffy and BSG alum Jane Espenson.

Good thing then for the fans that Universal Media muckety-mucks have just released the news of where and when you can get your Galactica on after the current series ends on March 20. We've got the dish...

Apparently the two-hour Caprica prequel film will not be broadcast (on Sci Fi Channel) until the whole series launches in 2010, but eager fans can buy it early as a DVD or digital download beginning April 21 of this year. The series proper, currently scheduled for a 22-episode first season, will launch in 2010.

Stoltz, who will play morally gray computer baron Daniel Greystone, tells us exclusively, "We start shooting in the summertime. I'm very excited about it. We're all sort of surprised that something with this kind of rich interesting content is actually going forward. Working with Paula Malcolmson [who plays Daniel's wife, Amanda] on the movie was so fun. We had done a short together 10 years ago called The Rocking-Horse Winner, so we had known each other over the years. It's really helps when you have a relationship with someone and you know that you like them and you're going into rather heavy work with them."

Admittedly, I stopped watching BSG after the first four eps of S3 (out of sheer lack of interest) but I had no idea they'd actually cast anyone for Caprica, let alone produced a pilot...

Its dynasty with robots, I cant see it being all that interesting.

I've never heard of the actors cast. Are they any good?

Paula Malcomson plays one of the whores in "Deadwood." Esai Morales has been around for a long time. Most recently appeared on "Jericho."

And if you dont' know who Eric Stoltz is, I pity you.

BSG season four is much better than season three.

Saw three of the movies his wikipedia page lists - Pulp Fiction, Jerry Maguire and Butterfly Effect. Can't really remember him from any of those three.

Ever see Mask?

He wasn't the main star in those. "Some Kind of Wonderful" is a good one.

The two minute clip I saw from Caprica kind of sucked. It was a girl and a guy walking through a holodeck then she started talking about "the one true God". AGain.

I thought it might be a bit sucky from the previews, what with the annoying plot fudging of having the Adama family involved with the first Cylons, but once BSG ends hopefully there sound be some interesting revelations about the actual start of the Cylons that might make it less annoying.

BUT WHO KNOWS MAYBE IT'LL BE SHIT.

I will watch it anyway! For a little while, if it sucks I'll just spam the MF instead.

We'll be waiting.

Of course if the final five are special cylons who can get reincarnated young, and grow old like a human, we might see them in caprica too.

Hmmm.. who should they get to play baby Tigh?

Normally with these sorts of things I say "wait till you see it to judge", but the whole concept sounds bad to me. It might be good tv, I dunno, but it sounds like a whole new idea that they've associated with BSG just to get some extra publicity.

Yeah, some old friends might just stop by once in a while to give Skinner and Wiggum a hand!

I hope they release the BSG "complete series" DVDs before the start of Caprica so I can catch up on that, then start watching Caprica and then stop again after about three episodes.

Skip "The Woman King".
