Watched Paul

I want to smell dark matter
The Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, CGI alien movie. It ws okay. Some funny bits, but a lot of the jokes weren't really all that funny and it seemed to rely on "character swears unexpectedly!" as a punchline a lot. And sometimes the character had to act dumb for the jokes to work. Felt like it could have been a bit better, but maybe they dumbed it down to appeal to the mass market or some shit. Bit short too, but everything's either too short or too long THESE DAYS. Probably worth watching!

Good review!

I was vaguely interested in it because of the Comic Con scenes and the cast, but the reception when it came out was lukewarm, so I never bothered.

I watched it about three days ago as well. Not as good as Hot Fuzz or Shaun of the Dead but it was decent.

It deserves extra points for absolutely enraging Christians on IMDB.

I wasn't expecting it to be close to Shaun or Hot Fuzz since Edgar Wright wasn't involved in Paul. The Comic Con stuff was quite good, but a bit rushed. I would have liked more of that and I'm not really sure what the point was of the asshole sci fi writer (other than Jeffrey Tambor camoeing in every comedy ever.) There were quite a lot of nerdy homages and lines from nerd moves throughout, so that was nice, but the plot and characters were a bit too thin for it all to add up to anything essential.

The Christian bashing isn't the bird coming back (that was one of the funnier jokes, but it was in all the trailers.) There's two fundamentalist Christian characters who make really easy targets for jokes by having really silly beliefs that most Christians wouldn't share.

I got a kick out the cantina scene and many more references that I felt OBLIGED to share with my girlfriend who just rolled her eyes at me until I felt small and irrelevant and sunk back in to my chair cradling my Mojito.
