You know all those reviews saying "it's just a tv episode"? They were right. It was just like a tv episode. Except longer and too drawn out. It would have made an okay two parter but not really that memorable. I think the problem is that Chris Carter wrote it and he didn't exactly write many memorable stand alone episodes. He was all about the mythology episdoes and there's NO mythology here. Remember how Mulder and Scully are on the run because aliens had taken over the FBI and were about to invade Earth (well, in 2012)? Not mentioned at all and Skinner's got a cameo and he's perfectly fine and not an alien. And what's with the big where the X-Files theme plays over the photo of Bush? And the WTF bit after the titles.
BUT it's always good to see Mulder and Scully again, Carter writes the characters well and Duchovny and Anderson are still good. All the usual "faith" stuff is done decently, but don't expect anything out of the usual or too exciting. Bill Connolly is pretty good as the paedo priest and Callum Keith Rennie is always good as a creepy villain.
I think the whole thing would have worked better if they had just released it straight to DVD and just hyped it as a new movie length episode. They could release a new one once a year or something, but now that the theatrical run's been a resounding "flop" this might be the last we see of old Mully and Sculder.
