I recommend Gundam SEED. If your pocketbook is low, then get the movies. It tells the story in 3 two-hour movies, rather than 50 episodes. You lose a lot of stuff, but you get the main bulk of the story. Then you can move onto SEED Destiny.

SEED Destiny just came out on DVD last month. I think it will be on Adult Swim sometime this May.
