SAN DIEGO - A controversial new Web site has a lot of people in the county talking about companies that hire illegal immigrants in San Diego.
Several companies, including some big names like Home Depot, are accused of hiring illegal immigrants on WeHireAliens.com. But are the allegations true?
The names of those everyday companies are listed on WeHireAliens.com's "Hall of Shame." Companies being targeted told NBC 7/39 that the site is unfair and irresponsible, and they are pointing the finger of blame back at WeHireAliens.com.
The creator of WeHireAliens.com said the site is a forum for those who want to do something about companies they believe are breaking the law. The Web site invites people to post the name of any employer they suspect of hiring illegal aliens.
Jason Mrocheck, who runs the site, told NBC 7/39 that he believes that since the government is not sanctioning employers who hire illegal immigrants, the public should.
"The premise is: Let's expose them to shame them," said Mrocheck. "If you're breaking the law, you ought to be exposed, and, No. 2, now that we know who you are, we're not going to take our business to you."
One of the companies on the site is Silvergate Retirement Residence. A Silvergate administrator said that the information on WeHireAliens.com was posted by a disgruntled employee and that every potential Silvergate employee must fill out an application, as required by the government.
She also said the site is irresponsible because no one checks out what is posted.
"We're not going to investigate," said Mrocheck. "I spend a lot of time editing, deleting and rejecting things that say, 'All the people looked Hispanic.' "
Mrocheck said the site does the best it can. But what if an innocent company gets named?
"We're not out to nail companies that are doing things legally," said Mrocheck. "If it's coming across to the users that they're employing illegal aliens, well, I think it needs to be looked into. And, of course, they're always welcome to contact us."
A representative for Silvergate said that its corporate offices have contacted the operators of WeHireAliens.com and complained. The company is still waiting for a response.
Another, more-familiar company -- The Home Depot -- is also named on WeHireAliens.com. Home Depot is also not happy about being named, saying the company is being falsely accused.
