What's a "digital copy"

CaptainWacky

I want to smell dark matter
When a DVD/Blu Ray thing includes a "digital copy" of the movie...what does that even fucking mean?

Q: Certain DVDs advertise a “Digital Copy” available – what is this?

A: Some movie studios, including Disney, 20th Century Fox and Lions Gate, have started to provide a high-quality digital-video file of a film in the same package as the DVD. This extra version, often on a separate disc, is meant to be copied to a Windows PC or Macintosh and viewed with Windows Media Player or iTunes.

The movie file can then be transferred to an iPod or a compatible Windows Media-based portable player. (This provides a legal alternative for getting movies on portable players without the use of third-party software to convert the video file directly from a DVD.) To make the transfer, insert the disc with the digital copy into the DVD drive. The DVD package should have the activation code needed to unlock the digital copy over the Internet, so have that handy and make sure you're online.

A menu with instructions should pop up to guide you through the transfer, but you usually start by clicking the Activate button. When prompted, type in the 12- to 16-digit activation code. Now, the digital copy should transfer to the computer's Windows Media or iTunes library and will probably take up at least a gigabyte of hard-drive space.

Twentieth Century Fox has information about its digital-copy discs at foxdigitalcopy.com and Disney also has details available online. Apple has its own illustrated steps for getting digital copies into iTunes.

I suppose that's useful but probably only 9 people use them.
