Up until a couple of months ago, I would have said LCD. I never liked plasma. I always thought the picture looked grainy and had too much of a screen door effect. However, there have been a few plasma models that have made me reconsider my opinion. It's important if you're getting a plasma to get 1080p. The 720p plasmas to me just don't have the smoothness. What size are you interested in? As far as Wal Mart goes, I think they're mostly stocking 720p plasmas. Here is a good comparison page for LCD vs. Plasma: http://reviews.cnet.com/4351-12658_7-6583301.html
The two 1080p plasma models that Wal Mart carries are both Panasonic. They have a 46 and a 50 inch, of the same TV. The review I read on this model (The 50" not the 46, but they should be the same except for the screen size) said it was a very good TV. Here are the links to those two.
I've always thought that plasmas look better than LCDs, but they also consume way more power, emit weirder robot laser beams at you, and need replacing more often.

True they use more power, but they don't emit any more harmful radiation than any other kind. Their lifespan now is on par with LCDs. And I can't believe I'm defending plasma displays. If myself from a year ago saw me typing this, I'd drag me out of my chair and kick my ass.
I've done comparison shopping because I kept reading great reviews for certain plasma sets...upon my own visual inspection at Best Buy & Sam's Club I have to say that LCD has a much sharper image. Also, plasma will be extinct before long.
