Broadband for the master race! lol...

OMG, every time I start reading about rural broadband I get excited. HOW COME IT ISN'T HAPPENING YET? This article makes me tingly http://blog.seattlepi.com/microsoft/archives/177725.asp

Microsoft researchers are developing technology that harnesses the unused TV frequencies, known as "white space," to broadcast long-range wireless Internet networks.

They've been testing their "WhiteFi" system on the Microsoft campus in Redmond, and so far have broadcast a network that reaches 1 kilometer away. It's the latest technology to come out of Microsoft Research's Networking over White Spaces (KNOWS) team.

If and when the technology is made viable, it could "create an explosion of connectivity at lower cost," said Victor Bahl, a principal researcher at Microsoft Research.

JUST THOUGHT I'D SHARE MY TINGLY MOMENT OF THE DAY.

This would be a great thing. A surprising amount of people are not in an area that is easily served by broadband.

I don't understand why there isn't more buzz about this on the internet. Even if you already live in an area that has broadband, this should be a much less expensive option.

It'll probably cause nose cancer.

No. Cancer of the ass.

Presumably, the people who will benefit the most don't have enough bandwidth to create much of a buzz. ;)

All I know is that a Verizon center is down the street from me, but my small town is to fucking cheap to put the lines down for Fios.

Between calling this "WhiteFi" and their latest blunder of a promo line, "The Internet Without Walls", I really wonder if MS is deliberately trying to seem like a crazy entity, like Nixon did to the Chinese before going over there.

"Internet Without Walls"? Meaning complete chaos and unlimited invasion of privacy? Mkay.

It just means it can travel through walls, like TV signals could.

Or Kitty Pryde.

Why don't they just call it KittyFi?

More people would buy it if they imagine the internet being brought to you by Ellen Page walking through walls.
